Axis Communications hosts its fifth high-impact technology conference at Dubai’s Expo 2020. The conference, titled “Share in the discovery of 5G,” will take place on 22 February 2022 and bring together a panel of experts to discuss the unique challenges and opportunities of 5G adoption for enterprises.

According to an official release, the conference will be opened by Ettiene van der Watt, Regional Director – Middle East & Africa at Axis. Discussions on topics ranging from smart buildings, smart cities, urban mobility, manufacturing, and the impact of 5G on personal and professional lives will formulate the flow of the event. These include a focus on 5G-enabled smart buildings with enhanced safety and security presented by Marie Helene Mansard, Director of Business Development – Axis Communications APAC, and 5G’s unique factors beyond unprecedented bandwidth speeds, presented by Vishnu Bhan, Senior Director at Singtel.

“By 2025, 5G networks are likely to cover one-third of the world’s population. While 3G and 4G LTE have primarily served the private subscriber, 5G will enable enterprises and governments to connect IoT devices at greater scale and improve decision-making with real-time data aggregation and analysis,” explained van der Watt.

Axis is hosting six transformative technology conferences at Expo 2020 from 1 October 2021 to 31 March 2022.

Axis Communications is a known manufacturer of network cameras, access control, and network audio devices for the physical security and video surveillance industries. Ettiene van der Watt, Regional Director – Middle East & Africa at Axis speaks to The Integrator about the strengths of the company and their expansion plans for the Middle East and Africa regions.

Give us an overview of Axis’ regional business strategy and strengths

Axis Communications has been operating in the UAE, and the broader Middle East, for 15 years. With consistent approaches over the years, we have built strong relationships with our enterprise customers. By creating and hosting a large technical community, consisting of engineers, partners, and trainers, we pursue focused accounts and support customers on all their safety and surveillance needs. The critical infrastructure sector is one that we have always been really strong in, but we also have a strong footprint in the transportation and large enterprises sectors.

Ettiene van der Watt, Regional Director – Middle East & Africa at Axis

While security is still our main focus, we are gradually expanding into related markets using new network-based products and solutions. Our experience working with network video and audio solutions, analytics, and access control contribute to the protection of people and property, process optimization, business efficiency, and information access.

Speak about the types of enterprises you collaborate with other than transportation and critical infrastructures

We offer surveillance services for airports, oil and gas enterprises, mining industries, education, and healthcare. To date, we have worked with several airports in the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and the US.

For mission-critical projects, we install explosion-protected cameras to monitor critical operations and processes, with remote visual verification of readings from gauges and sensors, across the sites. The thermal and temperature alarm cameras monitor for leaks and unsafe temperatures. The health and safety of employees are some of the key advantages of these systems.

Beyond that, we have a large customer base in the hotel and hospitality sector and with the healthcare sector coming into focus, in large part driven by the pandemic, we are seeing a lot of opportunities here too.

What genre of enterprise-based devices and solutions are offered by Axis Communications?

Axis Communications started its journey as a camera-centric company but we have evolved and now offer a wide range of IP-based products for video surveillance, network audio, access control, network intercoms, and analytics and management applications.

Can you elaborate on your business in the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) sector?

We understand that there is a huge opportunity in the SME sector and Axis has security solutions for this class of customers as well. To explore those business opportunities, we created an ecosystem including channel partners, distributors, and system integrators. We rely on the strength of our eco-partnerships in most regions.

Solutions offering enhanced functionalities including analytics are driving higher adoption rates

Physical security has continued to be a vibrant segment in the region and the growth in demand is expected to come from need for solutions offering enhanced functionalities in surveillance to analytics. With better capabilities built in, these are now helping able to expand the scope of their utility in dealing with most use case scenarios from perimeter security to traffic management, retail analytics, edge analytics, city surveillance etc.

Marwan Khoury, Regional Marketing Manager, Axis Communications says, “Axis expects 2017 to be the year when new camera capabilities are combined with real-time analytics to address several security challenges, including facial recognition, forensic analysis and perimeter protection. This is critical as according to IHS, by 2020, network camera sales are forecast to account for approximately 95% of total worldwide security camera sales, compared to approx. 80% in 2015.”

He adds that while there is slowdown anticipated in the UAE, there is a possibility that in KSA, many projects could be on hold.

A recent report from leading global analysts Frost & Sullivan has shown that spending in the physical security market of the Middle East region has increased and is expected to reach USD 10.2 billion in the next four years—making up at least 10 per cent of the global market.

Firas Jadalla, Regional Director – Middle East and Africa, Genetec says, “Genetec performed excellently in 2016, which is evident in its continued growth. Last year’s positive performance has given us the confidence to look towards further expanding our market presence in the Middle East and living up to our commitment to offer world-class unified IP security solutions across this diverse region. In line with this, we are currently expanding in Turkey by hiring additional resources.”

He adds, “The positive growth that we are experiencing has prompted us to venture into expanding our presence across the region. The move demonstrates our aim to move from being a ‘video security’ company to a company that provides its customers with intelligent insight that can be used across cities, airports, retail and business environments, schools and government offices.”

The region continues to be one of the most vibrant when it comes to growth in demand for surveillance solutions. Therefore, the region continues to attract the attention of many vendors who have set up and consolidated their local operations.

Ashwin Amarapur, Director & CEO of AllGoVision Technologies Pvt Ltd says, “AllGoVision has been able to establish a very emphatic presence in Middle East and thus Middle East has become one of our major markets. The business has grown 200% in the past one year and we have a dedicated Sales and Support Team based at Dubai specifically for the MENA region. We have been able to add many SIs and Channel Partners and are focusing on further expansion through more SIs/ Partners. Our Support team provides frequent demos and training along with Installations. We can provide remote Support from India as well as On-site support anywhere in the region.”

Axis Communications will be participating as a gold sponsor and exhibitor during Intersec 2017, taking place at the Dubai International Convention Exhibition Centre from January 22-24 2017. Axis co-founder Martin Gren will be present during the week of Intersec, which promises to display an array of the newest and most innovative products including the New AXIS Q1659 interchangeable-lens network camera which combines Canon imaging and Axis network technologies for high-resolution surveillance. Axis, along with its partners Cognimatics, EMC, Assa Abloy and Avaya, will also demonstrate end to end solutions across retail, critical infrastructure access control and oil & gas.

Featuring the same Canon-developed high-performance image sensor and image-processing engine employed in the Company’s EOS series of interchangeable-lens cameras, the new AXIS Q1659 makes possible the capture of approximately 20-megapixel (5472 x 3648 pixels) color video at 8 frames per second to support high-resolution surveillance applications. Additionally, through Axis’s proprietary video-processing and image-compression technologies, the camera offers even more storage and bandwidth savings for enhanced video surveillance efficiency.

In the lead up to Intersec, Axis’ Top Technology Trends in the security market for 2017 highlights Security as a Service, Integrated Solutions, Expanded use of Analytics, Deep Learning, Going Beyond video and Cybersecurity as key factors which are likely to fuel demand for increased security, both physical and online.

Axis expects 2017 to be the year when new camera capabilities are combined with real-time analytics to address several security challenges, including facial recognition, forensic analysis and perimeter protection. This is critical as according to IHS, by 2020, network camera sales are forecast to account for approximately 95% of total worldwide security camera sales, compared to approx. 80% in 2015.

Johan Paulsson, CTO, Axis Communications laid great emphasis on Cyber Security, He said, “We expect the so-called ‘Internet of Things’ to be much less of a novelty and more of the fabric of our daily lives. However, that means manufacturers of internet-enabled devices will have to step up and take much more responsibility for the level of default security they ship with. ‘The Internet of Things’ has evolved from buzzword status to mainstream reality, but not without its challenges. While we still think the idea of millions of IP-enabled devices is an exciting prospect for the future, 2016 gave us a sobering reminder of the pitfalls of not properly securing all those internet-connected fridges, DVRs and unfortunately security cameras. Given that most of those devices are just plugged in and switched on by customers, it is down to manufacturers to take responsibility to ensure they are secure out of the box”.

Axis has always taken its customers’ security seriously, and hope to see 2017 as the year when all manufacturers make this a priority. Axis will continue to strengthen existing offerings and make it easier for customers to keep their networks and devices secure.

The Internet of Things should be about better security, and more efficient businesses, organizations and cities thanks to ‘smart’ cameras, door stations and audio equipment with network connectivity. 2017 will add more ‘smarts’ to those devices, while also enabling customers to focus on what they do best and allowing security specialists to improve the services they provide.

Axis Communications will be located at stand S1-H12, Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre. For more updates, please follow Axis MEA on Twitter.
