Ciena is a networking system, services, and software company that helps healthcare businesses in several aspects of data management, including secure storage, delivery, and precision. Azz-Eddine Mansouri, General Manager – Sales at Ciena Middle East explains Ciena’s competencies to The Integrator.

Speak about the solutions Ciena introduced to transform the healthcare sector and their competencies

Healthcare is one of the most important sectors globally, and its demands are constantly changing. Since the explosive growth of medical data due to advanced medical imaging and the digital transformation of paper records to digital data files, global healthcare institutions cannot provide the best care for patients without a high-performance communication infrastructure.

Azz-Eddine Mansouri, General Manager – Sales at Ciena Middle East

This is where Ciena comes in, focusing on three key aspects of efficient data management: its secure storage, delivery, and precision. Our Electronic Health Record Network is built to handle massive capacities of data and respond to unpredictable bandwidth demands, aiming to refine the way that large amounts of medical information are stored and disseminated. Furthermore, its advanced medical imaging and digital video technology for telemedicine or telesurgery transporting high-bandwidth fMRI, CT scans, and genome sequencing— preserving every detail.

Experts say, “effective patient care requires efficient technologies.” Can you articulate the statement with the context of solutions that Ciena presented to the industry?

With the increasing quantity of data transferred to the digital world, the healthcare industry finds itself on the precipice of a massive data deluge. The security of information and disaster recovery are key, and Ciena plays a critical role in ensuring these demands are met.

Our infrastructure ensures constant availability to the server, meets compliance requirements, and provides off-site data storage backup and retrieval – all of which contribute to better care for patients, ensuring safe telemedicine and telesurgery, fewer medical errors, as well as the protection of patient data from cyber-attacks.

Tell us about the ongoing healthcare digitization projects of Ciena

Ciena is currently focused on developing cutting-edge technology to provide remote access to healthcare, recognizing the pivotal role that 5G connectivity plays in their efforts. From remote doctor’s appointments to conducting telesurgeries so that patients may receive treatment from the comfort of their homes, most developments in the digitization of healthcare are likely to come from an increased expansion of high-speed optical network connectivity and low latency 5G networks.

The organization also aims to provide large clinics and hospitals with a reliable ‘metro network infrastructure’ – or an interconnected network of smaller medical devices – to ensure quick, real-time transfer of information. These are further augmented by Edge centers, or small data hubs placed close to the hospital premises, enabling lower-latency data delivery and a more reliable network experience.

Ciena’s investment plans in the Middle East’s health sector for the coming years

Global telehealth and telemedicine are expected to reach USD 191.7 billion by 2025, due to increasing technology adoption. We can expect more edge data centers to be established throughout the region. Edge data centers are small data centers deployed closer to the end-user to ensure low latency in delivery and a more reliable network experience.

Ciena’s increased investment in the Middle East as a whole; reflects our commitment to the region and to creating a state-of-the-art infrastructure for the healthcare industry for the world to heal.

“While most IT and security operations (SecOps) decision-makers believe they should jointly share the responsibility for their organization’s data security strategy, many of these teams are not collaborating as effectively as possible to address growing cyber threats,” reveals new research commissioned by Cohesity, a data management service provider.

The survey also shows that of those respondents who believe collaboration is weak between IT and security, nearly half of respondents believe their organization is more exposed to cyber threats as a result — and the implications of that could have significant consequences for businesses.

The research is based on an April 2022 survey conducted by Censuswide, of more than 2,000 IT decision-makers and SecOps professionals (split nearly 50/50 between the two groups) from businesses in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia — all of whom have a role in the decision-making process for IT or security.

The survey was conducted as nearly three-quarters (74%) of respondents believe the threat of ransomware in their industry has increased over the last year, with nearly half of respondents (47%) saying their organization has been the victim of a ransomware attack in the last six months.

The survey uncovered the following results globally:

Security should be a shared responsibility: More than four in five (81%) of respondents overall (86% of IT decision-makers and 76% of SecOps) somewhat or strongly agree that IT and SecOps should share the responsibility for their organization’s data security strategy.

Effective collaboration between IT and security teams is frequently not happening: Almost a third of SecOps respondents (31%) believe the collaboration is not strong with IT, with 9% of those respondents going so far as to call it “weak.” Among IT decision-makers, more than a tenth of respondents (13%), believe collaboration with SecOps is not strong. In total, nearly a quarter (22%) of IT and SecOps respondents overall believe the collaboration between the two groups is not strong.

The ongoing tech talent shortage is making matters worse: When asked if the talent shortage is impacting the collaboration between IT and security teams, 78% of respondents (77% of IT decision-makers and 78% of SecOps) said, yes, it is having an impact.

Brian Spanswick, chief information security officer, Cohesity, comments, “for too long, many security teams focused primarily on preventing cyber attacks, while IT teams have focused on data protection, including backup and recovery. A complete data security strategy must bring these two worlds together — but in many cases, they remain separate and this lack of collaboration creates significant business risks and can put companies at the mercy of bad actors.”

Cohesity announces the expansion its data management as a service (DMaaS) offerings to customers in the Middle East.

DMaaS is a portfolio of Cohesity’s “software as a service” (SaaS) offerings, which designed to provide enterprise and mid-size customers with a simple way to back up, secure, govern, and analyze their data. Cohesity takes care of managing the underlying infrastructure while the service is hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS).

“With the threat of ransomware at unprecedented levels, being able to rapidly backup and recover is now a growing concern for the region’s IT leaders. Customers can now leverage our backup as a service offering as another way to enhance data protection and keep bad actors at bay,” said Brad Schwarz, VP and GM – Data Management as a Service, Cohesity. “We are pleased to offer customers in the Middle East even greater choice and flexibility. With Cohesity, they can manage their data directly, utilize Cohesity’s DMaaS offerings, work with a Cohesity-powered partner, or a combination of all three.”

Gregg Petersen, regional director, MEA, Cohesity, said, “not only does the expansion of our DMaaS-offerings to the Middle East empower customers to further simplify data management, but also gives our regional partners the opportunity to add their unique value and resell the solution through a variety distribution channels.”

An official release stated that customers can subscribe to current and future DMaaS offerings through authorized Cohesity channel partners, distributors, and in AWS Marketplace.

Cohesity, a data management solution provider, has announced the appointment of James Worrall as head of EMEA channels. Worrall has extensive experience in building sales channels, having been in leadership roles for networking, enterprise IT, and technology startups over the last 20 years. In his role at Cohesity, he will report to the Cohesity global partner organization, led by Mike Houghton. Worrall has responsibility for scaling the company’s EMEA partner ecosystem while advancing the company’s go-to-market strategy in the region.

James Worrall, Head of EMEA Channels

Before joining the team at Cohesity, Worrall was vice president of EMEA channel at F5 Networks and EMEA channel sales lead at Juniper Networks. In these and previous roles, Worrall held responsibility for developing the overarching channel program and strategy, with a focus on incentivizing partners, simplifying processes, and making the technology easy to understand and resell. Worrall is based north of Oslo, Norway, but traces his sales roots back to his youth in Bolton, UK, where he worked in door-to-door sales.

“Cohesity is already helping numerous organizations throughout EMEA transform how they back up, protect, secure, and derive value from data through next-gen data management, but I believe we have only scratched the surface of what is possible and the opportunity for partners is immense,” said Worrall.

Cohesity offers services consolidated on one multi-cloud data platform: backup and recovery, disaster recovery, file and object services, dev/test, and data compliance, security, and analytics – reducing complexity and eliminating mass data fragmentation.

“Digital First” As New Business Paradigm
While IT teams and IT leaders are historically called on to drive digitization and increase value, the roles will be reversed in the post-pandemic world. Strategic decision-making starts with digital experience and digital transformation since they are now deeply connected to the successful operation of any company.
We see this for example in business analytics, where the analysis of user experience journeys or customer experience journeys become a crucial information source for strategic decisions.

Cybersecurity and Resiliency
The pandemic months have triggered a rapid increase in ransomware attacks as more and more people worked remotely. Coincidentally, this opened up a multitude of new infection vectors. Enterprises had to come to terms with the fact that many IT security processes and protocols are not well suited to the fight against ransomware, because it is virtually impossible to cut off all these infection routes, especially when criminals use social engineering. Instead, enterprises will rely on AI-based prevention across their whole domain and stringent zero trust policies. Rather than preventing IT attacks from happening, this approach minimizes their impact. Once an infection happens, it is discovered almost instantaneously: Infected areas are cordoned off and infected files are replaced in almost real-time.

Sustained Impact of the Pandemic: Cloud Acceleration and the Supply Chain
The global supply chain has been brought close to its breaking point by the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on air, sea, and land travel. We predict that cloud adoption will accelerate faster as the supply chain constraints drive buyers to find alternatives to purchasing traditional on-premise infrastructure to meet demands. At the same time, optimization of production lines and business processes can help the system to become more robust in the future.

Productized AI
In 2022, artificial intelligence (AI) starts to permeate all industries. We will see it used in agriculture, food production, fast-food chains, and the entertainment and hospitality sector. Agriculture and the food industry, for example, will use it for packing and processing, while other sectors gain most from general automation and the simplification of their processes.

Data trends
Several technology sub-trends drive change and innovation. One is Analytics & Optimization of digital services. E.g., Finops results are much easier to come by as more automation and smarter applications take hold. This results in increased ROI from cloud investments throughout the public and private sectors.
Another trend concerns production environments. There is a clear move away from applications as companies deliver their services through containerized solutions and microservices.

Sustainability – ESG Becomes a Competitive Advantage
Green topics are on the rise, as demonstrated by the 2021 Climate Change Conference, the US infrastructure deal, or the traffic light coalition coming to power in Germany. We predict that businesses will head in the same direction. This is partly due to regulatory pressure, for example, to lower carbon dioxide emissions. But enterprises will also become intrinsically motivated to deliver green innovation.

The hybrid models, which allow companies to recruit talent everywhere, reduce office footprint, and significantly cut work travel.

After announcing the availability of its backup as a service offering (BaaS), Cohesity, a data management solutions provider announces the general availability of its next “as a service” offering – disaster recovery as a service (DRaaS). This new offering extends the disaster recovery (DR) capabilities provided by Cohesity SiteContinuity and adds the ability to use Amazon Web Services (AWS) as a recovery location for failover and failback in a Software as a Service (SaaS) model.

Matt Waxman, Vice President of Product Management at Cohesity says, “In an age of crippling ransomware attacks, the number one concern many IT leaders have is maintaining business continuity if they get hit. DRaaS can help organizations recover quickly and cost-effectively.”

An official release of Cohesity states, the following benefits of using DRaaS:

Minimize downtime and data loss: Reduces the risks of potential downtime and data loss with snapshot-based backup and near-sync replication that together help ensure all data is captured and ready to failover in the event of disaster or cyberattack

Meet service level agreements (SLAs): Customers can easily design recovery plans and assign SLAs

Simplify operations: Cohesity uniquely combines disaster recovery orchestration, snapshot-based backup, near-sync replication, and seamless failover to the public cloud in a single comprehensive offering

Lower costs and improve time-to-value: Reduce idle infrastructure by using on-demand pay-as-you-go cloud infrastructure from AWS in the event of a disaster or test drill. Cohesity uniquely supports standard AWS infrastructure, such as Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), in a DRaaS model.
