Medcare Hospitals and Medical Centres, part of Aster DM Healthcare Group, has partnered with InterSystems to implement InterSystems IntelliCare, becoming the first healthcare provider in the UAE to deploy a next-generation, AI-first electronic health record (EHR) platform.

Unlike conventional EHR systems that integrate artificial intelligence as an additional capability, IntelliCare has been built with AI embedded at the core of its clinical workflows. The platform is designed to streamline administrative processes, reduce documentation burdens, and enable physicians to dedicate more time to patient care while improving operational efficiency across Medcare’s network.

The AI-powered platform will provide clinicians with faster access to comprehensive patient information, including diagnoses, medications, laboratory results, procedures, and previous clinical notes. Features such as natural language interaction, intelligent information retrieval, and ambient clinical documentation are expected to simplify day-to-day workflows and reduce time spent on manual administrative tasks.

Future releases of IntelliCare will also introduce agentic AI capabilities, allowing intelligent assistants to support clinical decision-making and workflow management while ensuring physicians remain in control of care decisions.

Alisha Moopen, Managing Director and Group CEO of Aster DM Healthcare, said the implementation represents a significant step towards redefining healthcare delivery through intelligent technologies that augment clinical expertise rather than simply digitising existing processes.

The deployment also strengthens Medcare’s broader digital transformation strategy, reinforcing its commitment to delivering more connected, data-driven, and patient-centric healthcare services. With a unified digital health record spanning hospitals, clinics, laboratories, and insurers, the platform is expected to improve continuity of care, minimise duplication, and support more informed treatment decisions.

Ali Abi Raad, Managing Director of InterSystems Middle East, India and South Africa, noted that the implementation builds on a long-standing partnership between the two organisations and marks the next stage in Medcare’s healthcare technology journey.

Since its global launch in 2025, IntelliCare has been deployed across eight hospitals operated by Indonesia’s EMC Healthcare and is the first unified AI-powered electronic health record platform to achieve the European Union’s Class IIa Medical Device Regulation (MDR) certification for clinical safety.

The rollout positions Medcare among the region’s early adopters of AI-native healthcare platforms as healthcare providers increasingly look to intelligent systems to improve clinical outcomes, operational efficiency, and patient experience.

Christopher Hill, Chairperson & CEO of SindyXR, discusses loneliness, continuous care, AI-driven wellness communities, and why healthcare systems must rethink what happens between clinical appointments.

Christopher, before we talk about the technology, tell us about the moment you realised the healthcare system had a structural problem that nobody was building for. What did you see that others missed?

My “aha” moment was something I neither expected nor actively sought out.

As part of an angel investor group I participated in, I was introduced to SindyXR. Initially, I was absolutely not interested in healthcare. But during that same period, my mother was suffering from kidney failure and eventually passed away.

After her passing, my family discovered that she had been quietly leaning on friends in her age group who were dealing with similar illnesses. We were a close family, but in an effort to protect my father and siblings from her fears, she often turned to peers for emotional support between doctor visits.

What struck me was that people like my mother were doing everything the healthcare system asked of them — attending appointments, following treatments, and completing follow-ups — yet something critical was still missing.

They needed a support system to talk about loneliness, habits, fear, emotional wellbeing, and the realities of daily life between medical visits. None of that was being tracked, supported, or meaningfully understood within traditional healthcare systems.

That was the moment I understood what healthcare was missing, and ultimately why we built SindyXR’s Group Health Support System.

The WHO declared loneliness a global health epidemic in 2023. But SindyXR was already being built before that declaration. Were you solving for loneliness before it had that name?

As the WHO later acknowledged, loneliness directly affects health outcomes. After my mother passed away and I joined SindyXR, I quickly realised her situation was far from unique.

I watched people repeatedly engage with wellness apps and digital health platforms, only to abandon them within weeks. The reason was often the same: it felt like talking to a wall. There was no reciprocity, no sense of belonging, and no feeling that anyone else was walking the journey alongside them.

At SindyXR, we built for human connection from the very beginning — not as a feature, but as the core outcome.

One of the most revealing moments came through our partnerships with medical professionals such as Dr. Charles Cavo, Co-Founder and Chief Medical Officer of Pounds Transformation. Through our platform, patients were able to participate in guided peer support sessions between medical appointments, led by trusted healthcare professionals.

What surprised us most was not only how much patients benefited from speaking with one another, but how much doctors themselves learned simply by listening. Medical professionals gained deeper insight into how loneliness, stress, isolation, and emotional wellbeing directly shaped recovery and long-term outcomes in ways traditional clinical appointments rarely capture.

Most healthcare technology still focuses on appointments, diagnosis, prescriptions, and procedures. Why has the industry largely ignored what happens between those moments?

Healthcare has largely followed the money, and the money has traditionally been concentrated around clinical intervention.

The fifteen-minute appointment became the centre of the system because it was measurable, billable, and operationally structured. But the irony is that what happens between appointments often determines what happens at the next one.

The industry has spent decades studying outcomes while ignoring many of the underlying conditions that produce them.

That is the structural gap SindyXR was built to address.

Tell us about the name SindyXR, and the philosophy behind the tagline ‘Healthier Together. Wherever.’

Traditional one-to-one telehealth systems have proven limited over time. Research consistently shows that group-based, socially connected approaches often produce stronger long-term outcomes.

SindyXR represents connected community experiences delivered across multiple environments and technologies. “Healthier Together. Wherever.” reflects that philosophy directly.

Sometimes that experience happens in person. Sometimes through laptops or smartphones via telehealth. Increasingly, we are also seeing growing demand for augmented and virtual reality environments that emerged during and after the pandemic. We support those experiences as well.

The core idea is simple: healthcare should not feel isolated simply because it is delivered digitally.

You often talk about ‘relationship play’ as a design philosophy. How do you engineer human connection into a technology platform without making it feel artificial?

Relationship play means designing for reciprocity — creating environments where people both give and receive support in meaningful ways.

It is about building shared identity, shared context, and shared progress within communities.

What becomes particularly interesting in the AI era is that every interaction creates valuable experiential learning. While fully respecting HIPAA privacy and confidentiality standards, our AI systems learn how people cope, communicate, support one another, and respond emotionally during wellness interactions.

Over time, this creates contextual understanding that traditional healthcare systems rarely capture. It allows medical professionals to better understand behavioural and emotional patterns surrounding recovery, chronic illness, and long-term care across different demographics and conditions.

That kind of human-centred insight is incredibly difficult for isolated healthcare systems or standalone AI tools to generate independently.

If you could say one thing directly to healthcare leaders, digital health investors, and policymakers about what must change in continuous care, what would it be?

If you want to reduce hospitalizations, extend healthy years, and lower long-term pressure on healthcare systems, then you have to invest in what happens every day—not just at the edge of crisis.

The populations requiring continuous care most urgently—the aging, chronically ill, mentally vulnerable, and those recovering from trauma or loss—are often also the most socially isolated.

That is not a coincidence. In many cases, it is the mechanism through which conditions worsen.

Today, the technology finally exists to support continuous, community-driven care at scale, across geographies, and at a fraction of the cost of downstream intervention.

The real question is whether healthcare systems are ready to rethink what care actually means beyond the clinical environment itself.

Organised by Informa Markets in partnership with the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), WHX Tech aims to redefine how healthcare is delivered and experienced. Backed by the UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP), Dubai Health, Dubai Health Authority (DHA), Emirates Health Services (EHS), and NABIDH, the event promises a dynamic mix of insight, networking, and actionable strategies.

World X Stage: Turning Ideas into Action

Technologies are already improving care delivery. Hospitals are integrating AI to boost safety and efficiency, while startups are pioneering patient engagement tools that deliver measurable results.

Tatyana Kanzaveli, Founder & CEO of Open Health Network, will address Generative AI in Healthcare, tackling barriers that hold it back from advancing beyond basic chatbot functions. Her session will explore AI’s role in accelerating drug discovery, aiding clinical decision-making, and enabling personalised care delivery.

“Rather than come in to patch a broken system, AI is here to reprogram it,” Kanzaveli said. “At WHX Tech, I will show how we are breaking barriers with platforms such as TrialSphere for AI-powered clinical trials and TAMI, our generative AI solution for scalable behavioural health.”

Women Leading the Digital Health Agenda

The agenda puts women leaders in the spotlight. Dr. Rashmi Rao (Chief Product Officer, Philips) decodes the unwritten rules of health innovation and investment. Meghan Huffman (VP, Digital Health, Novant Health) joins sessions on adoption and real-world applications. Furthermore, she appears on “Envisioning Healthcare in 2050,” covering AI integration, patient-centric models, and system-wide impact.

“The real work is making digital health usable, trusted, and embedded in care,” Huffman notes. Therefore, the sessions emphasize change management, clinician buy-in, and outcomes.

“Getting the innovative ideas and technology in place is often the easy part,” Huffman said. “The real work is making digital health usable, trusted, and embedded in care delivery.”

AI and Adoption: Driving Real Change

Generative AI and interoperability anchor the agenda. Additionally, live hospital simulations translate strategy into practice. The US$50,000 WHX Tech Xcelerate Startup Competition and curated investor matchmaking speed promising ideas to market. Hence, founders gain feedback, partners, and pilots in days—not months.

Peter Hall, President – Middle East, India, Türkiye & Africa at Informa Markets, emphasised action: “From government partnerships to our global speaker lineup, every element is geared toward solutions that improve care today and for tomorrow.”

Built on the Arab Health Legacy

Written by: Jacob Chacko, Regional Director – ME, Saudi & SA at Aruba, an HPE company

There’s no denying that COVID-19 had an irreversible impact across every industry, perhaps most notably the healthcare sector. Two years ago, healthcare providers and facilities had to make huge changes to adjust to the influx of COVID patients.

From telemedicine to patient portals, new technologies are still being deployed today to help the system fight back against the backlog of patients needing care, as well as deliver the improved and more seamless service that customers now expect. This has meant that the IoT device explosion is on the rise across the healthcare sector. Deloitte predicts that the IoMT market will grow in Europe from $ 12 billion to $44billion by 2025.

As healthcare organizations continue to introduce IoT devices to their operations, their digital success stories depend on one fundamental component – a reliable network. Resilient and secure connectivity must underpin every institution’s digital roadmap, upholding and progressing the convergence of IT, patient care, and operational efficiencies. So, just how do they achieve this?

Step 1: Upgrading the Network

Many legacy networks that IT teams in the healthcare sector are pushed to work with were designed during a pre-COVID time when applications were static. These outdated networks not only create their roadblocks but trying to adapt them to support today’s demands can also result in huge operational issues. An IT team tasked with scaling their network up to support a surge in users and devices across various locations would be faced with having to manually process every connection type and device if a network hasn’t been modernized.

Networks based on traditional VLAN architectures will struggle to accommodate huge amounts of IoT devices, so modernizing WAN solutions with SD-WAN should be seen as the next step for healthcare organizations. Offering greater efficiency and cost savings, hospitals and clinics can also opt for an approach that doesn’t involve the wholesale replacement of their current infrastructures, but rather look for options that coexist with current architectures.

Step 2: Leveraging Automation

With a modern network in place and now set up for scale and connectivity, health organizations must then look towards leveraging the benefits of automation.

As all these IoT devices churn out large quantities of health information, automation merged with other smart technologies such as machine learning can help turn into actionable insights that healthcare organizations can use to build new solutions.

Here, simplified workflows can also help alleviate administrative burdens and redeploy precious time so that staff can focus on patient care. From apps that help patients manage their care themselves, to online symptom checkers and e-triage AI tools, virtual agents that can carry out tasks in hospitals, or a bionic pancreas to help patients with diabetes, adding AI to your technology arsenal can greatly enhance patient care.

Step 3: Security

While a modern network and the IoT devices and AI solutions it can support have the potential to transform healthcare in practice, the growing use of connective devices also poses increased risk for healthcare organizations. In a hospital setting where staff, patients, and visitors are always on the go, multiple new devices are constantly joining and leaving the network. Now, securing the network is more important than ever.

The key to a secure network is visibility. This means that everything, from sensors to visitors’ phones, needs to be individually identified, secured, and monitored. By ‘fingerprinting’ every device this way, any vulnerability can be spotted and addressed immediately before it is exploited. This level of nuance is also particularly vital in healthcare. In life-or-death environments, critical-care devices that need to run continuously can’t be treated the same way as those which can be disconnected if needed. Instead, Zero Trust architectures ensure that all devices and users trying to access the network are identified and authenticated, before providing the least amount of access required through a predefined security policy.

Conclusion

The digital transformation of our healthcare system is being driven by the benefits of a truly IoT-device-connected environment. However, to unlock the promises of this future, it is fundamental that organizations have a network in place to support this. By deploying a modern and secure network and leveraging automation, healthcare organizations can drive operational efficiencies, redeploy employee time and ultimately enhance patient care.

Dr. Jassim Haji, chairman of the International Group of Artificial Intelligence (IGOAI) and a researcher in technology and AI, writes a cover feature on the transformational prospects of the healthcare sector besides the adoption of AI into patient care.

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare was not adequate and much less compared with commercial verticals especially in modern societies, such as the United States, China, and Europe. Had there been the modern technologies used efficiently in hospitals, research labs, patient care units, and drug development centers earlier, we could have saved many lives that the COVID-19 pandemic claimed.

Concerns from similar and diverse angles had been raised by global expert communities and they were inviting the attention of various government authorities, state agencies, and private companies. Incorporating all of it, the International Group of Artificial Intelligence (IGOAI), a community of academics, students, CIOs, members of global AI associations, and professionals who engage with AI, successfully hosted a virtual summit on “The Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare” on 29th June 2022 with the theme of “AI simplifies the lives of patients, doctors, and hospital administrators by performing tasks that are typically done by humans, but in less time and at a fraction of the cost.”

Dr. Jassim Haji, Chairman, IGOAI

The following article refers to the key areas of AI that were analyzed during the summit and they would ideally catalyze further discussions on the subject.

Supports Medical Imaging Analysis

AI is used as a tool for case triage. It supports a clinician reviewing images and scans. This enables radiologists or cardiologists to identify essential insights for prioritizing critical cases, avoid potential errors in reading electronic health records (EHRs), and establish more precise diagnoses.

Builds Complex And Consolidated Platforms For Drug Discovery

AI algorithms can identify new drug applications, tracing their toxic potential as well as their mechanisms of action. This technology led to the foundation of a drug discovery platform that enables the company to repurpose existing drugs and bioactive compounds.

Forecast Kidney Disease

Acute kidney injury can be difficult to detect by clinicians but can cause patients to deteriorate very fast and become life-threatening. With an estimated 11% of deaths in hospitals following a failure to identify and treat patients, the early prediction and treatment of these cases can have a huge impact to reduce life-long treatment and the cost of kidney dialysis.

Provides Valuable Assistance to Emergency Medical Staff

During a sudden heart attack, the time between the 911 or 999 call to the ambulance arrival is crucial for recovery. For an increased chance of survival, emergency dispatchers must be able to recognize the symptoms of a cardiac arrest to take appropriate measures. AI can analyze both verbal and nonverbal clues to establish a diagnosis from a distance.

Supports Health Equity

The AI and ML industry has the responsibility to design healthcare systems and tools that ensure fairness and equality are met, both in data science and in clinical studies, to deliver the best possible health outcomes. With more use of ML algorithms in various areas of medicine, the risk of health inequities can occur.

Natural Language Processing

Making sense of human language has been a goal of AI researchers since the 1950s. This field, NLP, includes applications such as speech recognition, text analysis, translation, and other goals related to language.

There are two basic approaches to it: statistical and semantic NLP. Statistical NLP is based on machine learning and has contributed to a recent increase in the accuracy of recognition. It requires a large “corpus” or body of language from which to learn.

Rule-Based Expert Systems

Expert systems based on collections of “if-then” rules were the dominant technology for AI in the 1980s and were widely used commercially in that and later periods. In healthcare, they were widely employed for “clinical decision support” purposes over the last couple of decades and are still in wide use today. Many electronic health records (EHR) providers furnish a set of rules with their systems today.

Physical Robots

Physical robots are well known by this point, given that more than 200,000 industrial robots are installed each year around the world. They perform pre-defined tasks, such as lifting, repositioning, welding, or assembling objects in places like factories and warehouses and delivering supplies in hospitals. Recently, robots have become more collaborative with humans and are more easily trained by moving them through the desired task. They are also becoming more intelligent, as other AI capabilities are being embedded in their “brains.”

Robotic Process Automation

This technology performs structured digital tasks for administrative purposes, i.e., those involving information systems, as if they were a human user following a script or rules. Compared to other forms of AI they are inexpensive, easy to program, and transparent in their actions. Robotic process automation (RPA) doesn’t involve robots – only computer programs on servers. It relies on a combination of workflow, business rules, and “presentation layer” integration with information systems to act like a semi-intelligent user of the systems. In healthcare, they are used for repetitive tasks like prior authorization, updating patient records, or billing.

Patient Engagement And Adherence Applications

Patient engagement and adherence have long been seen as the ‘last mile”’ problem of healthcare – the final barrier between ineffective and good health outcomes. The more patients proactively participate in their well-being and care, the better the outcomes – utilization, financial outcomes, and member experience. These factors are increasingly being addressed by big data and AI.

Administrative Applications

There are also a great many administrative applications in healthcare. The use of AI is somewhat less potentially revolutionary in this domain as compared to patient care, but it can provide substantial efficiencies.

International Group of Artificial Intelligence (IGOAI) was established in 2021 to create global awareness about artificial intelligence (AI). It disseminates learning about AI through global summits and conferences by articulating potential algorithm-based biases, security gaps, and other key areas that need feedback and scrutiny.

Dr. Eric Topol, Cardiologist, Director of Scripps Research Translational Institute, once said, “what I am most excited about artificial intelligence (AI) is using the future to bring back the past: to restore the care in healthcare. But it will require substantial activism of the medical community to stand up for patients and not allow further upending the erosion of the doctor-patient relationship.”

Such observations eventually invite the judicious attention of the medical community to investigate and resolve the reeling issues in the sector. Whilst endorsing such important observations, The Integrator’s July issue explains several technological achievements in healthcare. As the intelligence of computer programs is used alongside the judgments of doctors and medical professionals, more certain diagnoses and treatments can be offered to patients. Similarly, the prediction of diseases (heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, etc.) helps medical practitioners give effective advice to people. If AI alone manages to create such buzz in the healthcare sector, the combination of disruptive technologies, including extended reality (VR, AR), AI, robotics, digital health, and metaverse in the sector would change our perspective on patient care.
