Dr. Eric Topol, Cardiologist, Director of Scripps Research Translational Institute, once said, “what I am most excited about artificial intelligence (AI) is using the future to bring back the past: to restore the care in healthcare. But it will require substantial activism of the medical community to stand up for patients and not allow further upending the erosion of the doctor-patient relationship.”

Such observations eventually invite the judicious attention of the medical community to investigate and resolve the reeling issues in the sector. Whilst endorsing such important observations, The Integrator’s July issue explains several technological achievements in healthcare. As the intelligence of computer programs is used alongside the judgments of doctors and medical professionals, more certain diagnoses and treatments can be offered to patients. Similarly, the prediction of diseases (heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, etc.) helps medical practitioners give effective advice to people. If AI alone manages to create such buzz in the healthcare sector, the combination of disruptive technologies, including extended reality (VR, AR), AI, robotics, digital health, and metaverse in the sector would change our perspective on patient care.

Mecomed, the Medical Technology Association in the Middle East and Africa, hosted the Networking Breakfast at Arab Health 2022, one of the region’s leading medical technology events that took place last month at the Dubai World Trade Centre.

The event was attended by over 60 MedTech executives and government officials, wherein Rami Rajab, Chairman of Mecomed, highlighted the association’s achievements and shared strategic objectives in the post-pandemic era with the audience. He stated, “To improve the region’s healthcare experience, the industry must collaborate with the regulators on implementing the newest and safest medical technology. The challenges presented by the pandemic have inspired us to further improve patients’ health through innovations that will empower them to take better control of their wellbeing. Mecomed is committed to helping the MedTech industry flourish through efforts that impact policies, incorporate best world practices, and underline the true value of today’s medical technology.”

After the Chairman’s address, he moderated a panel discussion between Marwan Abdulaziz Al Janahi, Managing Director of Dubai Science Park, Tarek El-Rahbani, Senior Managing Director, Growth Emerging Markets (GEM-South), Boston Scientific, and Maher Abouzeid, CEO of MedServ Medical Investments, where the panelists discussed how the MedTech industry leads the transformation of healthcare in the Middle East and Africa, as part of its ongoing efforts to maintain stability and growth in the region’s healthcare systems while putting patients first.

Furthermore, Mecomed underlined the importance of partnerships between the MedTech industry and policymakers focused on enhancing the healthcare experience in the MEA region, enabled by the recent challenges of the pandemic.
