COVID-19 has been a massive catalyst for digital transformation, but companies need to do more than implement short-term solutions that enable remote work. Businesses with an eye to fully automated workflows will enjoy benefits that far outlast the pandemic.

Work From Home – Work Must Go On

Working from home isn’t exactly new, but the need to work from home is. When it became apparent that social distancing would be a key tactic to slow the spread of COVID-19, immediately closing office buildings was the natural response.

Naji Kazak, Managing Director – EMEA at Kodak Alaris

In fact, it is likely that companies’ familiarity with remote work — if only on an occasional basis — has smoothed the rapid transition and enabled ongoing operations.

However, this urgency has served as a sort of double-edged sword: While it is responsible for the rapid transition to remote work policies, it is also responsible for quick fixes that may do more to hinder than help workflows in the long run.

Urgency Spurs Tech Adoption

Companies that embrace digital transformation are more successful than those that lag behind.

Digital companies typically have a superior customer experience, better employee engagement and retention, and increased business growth and profits, among other benefits. What’s more, manual processes can cause companies to miss opportunities, make ill-informed business decisions, and lose clients to competition.

In the midst of this global pandemic, these realities take on even greater importance: Digital transformation is no longer a question of “sinking or swimming” over an extended period of time, but of sinking or swimming now. Technology adoption has been one of the single biggest factors in ensuring business survival.

For instance, grocery stores have turned to online ordering and curbside pickup, restaurants have implemented QR code menus to minimize shared objects, and healthcare organizations have relied on telehealth platforms to provide virtual care.

For companies that have turned to remote work, tech adoption has meant using equipment such as document scanners, mobile devices, and multifunction printers (MFPs) as specific needs arise.

From Digitizing Paper Processes to Fully Integrated Workflows

Getting the right information to the right employees is challenging enough when everything is paper-based and everyone’s working remotely, but the issue is greater than that.

Enabling digital workflows isn’t just about scanning paper documents into electronic files so that the immediate task at hand can be completed, but about automating the processes themselves so that work can be carried out efficiently and effectively over the long term.

This automation requires taking a close look at business processes, reengineering them as needed, and investing in technology that goes beyond simple document capture.

For instance, when faced with these issues, Xenith Intelligent Workplace Solutions teamed up with Kodak Alaris to create a new Scan@Home Solution with preconfigured automatic workflows. Built on Kodak Alaris’ INfuse Smart Connected Scanning Solution, the offering enables workers to save information to the right place, send documents to the right person, and scan directly into line-of-business systems from home — all without a PC connection or local software.

A Cultural Shift

Remote work seems to be here to stay, and digital transformation will continue to facilitate it. For companies that haven’t embraced it, now is the time to invest in the digital transformation strategies that enable remote work, and in the technologies that spur digital transformation.

Today’s cybersecurity challenges are not much different from past years’, with one slight twist – the attack surface has dramatically shifted. The pandemic forced us to rethink our IT environment as most users had no choice but to work remotely, relying on their residential internet services. This dramatic shift did not give us any time to plan connectivity or security. The result is that every user’s device can become a potential threat. But this blog is not another discussion about the perils of working from home. It is about understanding how this new paradigm affects the security thought process and what organizations have experienced concerning their security posture based on this new normal.

Anthony James, VP of Product Marketing at Infoblox

We recently commissioned a survey to understand the global state of security, including the impact of remote workers, which was completed with over 1,100 IT and cybersecurity decision-makers and influencers participants, covering 11 countries.

The participants also shed some insight into current threats and anticipated investments designed to prevent ransomware and other serious security concerns. Unsurprisingly, the report highlights that moving to a remote work environment contributed to an increase in security incidents, including data loss, ransomware, and other types of attacks via cloud services. The result of the survey is a summary of all respondents, as well as multiple regional or country-specific reports.

If you take the time to read all of the reports, you will find a commonality of tools most organizations invest in. VPN took the lion’s share of investments in the past 12 months. However, DDI and DNS technologies are growing in popularity. 41% deployed cloud-managed DDI (DNS, DHCP, and IP management) servers as security controls. When hunting down a threat source, 40% relied on network flow data that DDI provides, 39% used DNS queries, and 39% used outside threat intelligence services.

What I also found interesting is how each country diverged in the types of threats or vulnerabilities they were most concerned about in the next 12 months. Here are some examples that bring to life the fact that every region or country may face a common set of cyber threats; they may differ in the order of importance:

Data leakage – this was the top concern amongst almost all countries surveyed, with an outlier being the US, where “ransomware” made it to the first spot.

Ransomware – this was the second concern amongst almost all countries surveyed, with an outlier being the US, where “Data leakage” made it to the second spot.

Attack via remote worker connections made it to third for almost all countries surveyed, with an outlier in the EMEA roll-up, where “Direct attack through cloud services” made it to third.

Another interesting finding by comparing each region or country was concerning, where organizations identified the source of a breach. The following is another sample comparing some of these reports:

WiFi access point – this was the first source of breaches for almost all countries

Cloud infrastructure or application – was the second source of breaches for almost all countries

43% of respondents pegged the cost of a breach to $1 million or more.

There are many great examples of how organizations respond to the new workforce environment, with many similarities between regions or countries.

It’s difficult to make predictions about the future. Especially when it’s predicting a future for the channel, which is a completely imperfect exercise due to how rapidly things progress, challenges to innovation, and the unpredictability of consumer trends which resellers constantly have to evolve with. While only a few new technological or business developments disrupted the status quo over the last 12 months, it was this year that certainly accelerated many technology trends already in motion for the channel. However, based on current enterprise and consumer behavior, we can attempt to make some predictions on which technologies will most impact the channel in the next year.

Damian Jaume, President, Dynabook Europe GmbH

Channel to drive mobile edge computing and smart glasses forward

Our research finds that 63% of organizations plan to deploy smart glasses within the next 24 months. In industries such as maintenance and logistics, this will increasingly become the norm as devices such as assisted reality (AR) smart glasses, will be key to enabling frontline or field workers to work anywhere without having access to a Wi-Fi network. In 2022, we believe businesses will formalize their ideas to implement these technologies.

A trusted advisor for a secure and hybrid work environment

The last year has changed working environments forever, but hybrid working does not come without risks. The current climate has forced businesses to regularly evaluate their security processes to protect both employee and company data. In 2022, we believe one area where this will really gain attention is device security.

As more businesses look to adopt more secure solutions, the channel will support remote workers by becoming their trusted advisor – offering knowledge from their own security skills sets, as well as secure solutions across both hardware and software, including two-factor authentication, Windows 11, Trusted Platform Module and mobile-secure client solutions.

Salespeople will need to evolve to maintain personable relationships

One of the biggest changes in the channel sales journey over the last year has been around maintaining personable interactions with customers in times of remote working. For the channel, selling has traditionally been about building and maintaining relationships, whereby salespeople would take customers through a personal journey, meeting face-to-face to discuss product and service offerings. As more salespeople are working remotely today, there’s been a challenge for customers to meet an entire sales team in an effective, personable, and timeless manner.

Drone delivery services will make the channel more profitable

COVID-19 presented many challenges to global supply chains, and industries such as logistics needed technologies like automation and robotics, to help pick, pack and dispatch ever-increasing amounts of orders. Both of these technologies will continue to play a key role in this space as we go into 2022.

Meanwhile, drone delivery services were ahead of their time five years ago, which is a large part of the reason that Amazon’s Prime Air plans are currently on the rocks. But recent predictions say the tide is about to change: the global warehouse robotics market size is expected to grow from USD 4.7 Billion in 2021 to USD 9.1 Billion by 2026. As drone delivery services start to find their feet, this can open up new revenue opportunities.

The channel will play a key role in offering sustainable packages

E-Waste found that 97% of enterprises around the world had to purchase new laptops to accommodate the shift to remote working during the pandemic. In 2022, we will see businesses planning to make smart and sustainable choices in several ways. One of the ‘easy wins’ will be to start ethically disposing of old devices through initiatives such as reselling and recycling. The provides an opportunity for resellers to develop a whole end-to-end package with sustainable credentials for customers looking to recycle or dispose of old devices ethically, resulting in those customers reducing their carbon footprint and making hybrid working work for everyone.

First, according to Synergy Research, Logitech has ranked #1 worldwide in video conferencing hardware.* Fueled by the acceleration of remote work, Logitech experienced its strongest years to date. According to Synergy’s Research, Logitech accounted for nearly fifty percent of all video conferencing devices sold in the Q1 FY21, and over thirty percent of the industry’s revenue.

In addition to this #1 position, Logitech has been named the Market Leader in Video Conferencing Devices by Frost & Sullivan, recognizing the company that has achieved the greatest market share resulting from outstanding performance, products, and services. To make its assessments, Frost & Sullivan identifies companies at the innovation and growth forefront of their respective industries that most effectively address new challenges and opportunities.

This was the communication giant’s first time reaching that milestone. Logitech has long dominated the video conferencing devices market in unit shipments. Its recently earned revenue leadership position is a further testament to its unique design-led approach that focuses on creating meaningful products with a clarity of purpose and clear benefits to the users in delivering simple, effortless communication experiences.”

As technology continues to reshape work, Logitech is uniquely positioned to help address emerging and evolving hybrid work trends. Raising the bar on meeting room solutions and optimizing video conferencing for the hybrid worker, our products have become a hallmark for frictionless user experiences and scalable deployments for every meeting space. We owe our success to our customers, who believe in the quality of our VC products, from conference cameras to complete room solutions.

Loubna Imenchal, Head of Video collaboration for AMECA region (Africa, Middle East Turkey, and Central Asia), said: “The results of recent surveys are very encouraging and confirm what we see in the field here in the Middle East. Organizations increasingly recognize the value of high quality, seamless video collaboration, and with the ongoing shift to hybrid working and learning, we look forward to helping teams collaborate with our best-in-class video collaboration tools.”

Linksys is one of the leading brands of data networking hardware products, sold to home users and small businesses. Amanulla Khan, Managing Director of Linksys Middle East, Turkey & Africa joins a face-to-face conversation with The Integrator during GITEX Technology Week 2021 and discusses the range of enterprise-specific products offered by the company considering the increased need for secure remote work solutions.

Hello Mr. Aman! I want to formally thank you for giving us an interview for the October edition of The Integrator and sparing time for this face-to-face interaction. Hope you had excellent interactions with potential customers at the GITEX.

The COVID-19 pandemic seemingly shifted the professional landscape of work and collaboration. How do you react to it?

I think even the work culture started to change well before the pandemic. Solutions that accommodate office and remote work have been in development for a while now. A high percentage the US workforce wanted to work remotely and such demands were normalized even before the pandemic hit. However, business continuity plans of the companies after COVID-19 hit accelerated the need for remote working solutions, increased discussions on cyber security, and significantly blurred the line between consumer and enterprise, across the globe.

So, I think it isn’t going to be any different globally even if companies abstain work from home because everyone is moving towards a hybrid way of working. The biggest challenge then for all enterprises is the edges moved from the office, from the corporate network in the corporate offices to homes.

Amanulla Khan, Managing Director of Linksys Middle East, Turkey & Africa

What you need is a unique network which provides you the performance, and access to all the resources, which are available in the corporate network, and it needs to be secured. So, security becomes a big concern as vulnerabilities increase. For example, if you have 200 branches at different locations, with 200 people working at different times, instead of having 20 branch offices, where everyone works at the same schedule.

Tell us about Linksys’ latest product HomeWRK that features remote work

HomeWRK is our first product, launched recently and that is secured by Fortinet. We are scaling it up for today’s enterprise needs to offer enterprise grade security and performance to working from home.

Do you have a strategic partnership with any video collaboration tools?

We are giving users the flexibility to prioritize the collaboration tool that they are using. Whether it is zoom or Microsoft Teams, or RingCentral, the user should be able to securely connect and collaborate. The HomeWRK device will be able to connect to multiple operational devices, such as mobile and computer, tablet, wearables, etc. for work or study purposes. There will be consistent speed ensured for each device.

The firewall, part of HomeWRK, will connect straight into the corporate network or enterprise network without having to connect to a VPN. It creates a tunnel that will be fully secured and this part of the network is fully managed through the company corporate IT team. Fundamentally, the enterprise network will be away from cyberthreats while each member at home access different things through the home network.

The major context of our discussion was security, Is Linksys aiming to enter an industry where critical operations (finance, bank, healthcare, security, etc.) take place?

Securing networks is probably the life solution for some enterprises, especially in spaces of finance, healthcare, banks, etc. For all these verticals, there is no better player and no better partner than Fortinet to secure networks.

We are partnered with Fortinet to secure our products and continue interacting with enterprises of all of these verticals. We educate customers on how well we secure our products and their networks and see business opportunities in doing it.

Speak about the unique products of Linksys for the consumer and business-centric market

As a leader in the market, we are always looking to offer reliable solutions to consumers and businesses because we understand the importance of strong and steady technology. For both our consumer and business segments, we are simultaneously working to expand our WiFi solutions by integrating the latest and greatest technologies such as WiFi 6 and 6E and/or the newest iterations of Mesh WiFi. We also do this by combining different functionalities into our solutions in line with IoT ecosystems. We’re also proud of Linksys HomeWRK for Business, the first-ever enterprise solution to deliver secure network connectivity for both corporate and personal needs in one easy-to-setup unit optimized for business applications and collaboration tools. In a similar vein, Linksys HomeWRK for Education will bring reliable connectivity and security to students at home. The HomeWRK solutions are secured by Fortinet who bring their expertise to safeguard cyber threats introduced by home networks. We believe technology should be accessible to everyone, so we aim to make our solutions easy to use and reliable.

Amanulla Khan, Managing Director of Linksys Middle East, Turkey & Africa

How do you evaluate Linksys’s business prospects for the coming years?

Our business will grow in many ways. In terms of technology, we expect 6E and Mesh to be more commonly adopted amongst consumers and our product roadmap will reflect that demand. We expect the same for 5G as it becomes more accessible to the mass market through ISP infrastructures being set up across the country. Concerning our business initiatives, we expect retail to expand their online presence in the region, which will demand more reliable networks. ISPs are on their way to offering higher-end solutions and Mesh Wi-Fi products as the demand for higher speeds and efficient networking grows. We will be working closely with them during these developments. We are looking at a shift for SMEs to move to a subscription-based pay-as-you-grow model as they become less reliant on large infrastructures. Our Linksys Cloud Manager solution is already enabling this and we expect more businesses to move to this model.

What sorts of concentration and association Linksys has with SMEs and large enterprises?

We have always had great relationships with SMEs which we will continue to grow through offering cloud-managed access points (Linksys Cloud Manager), switches, and routers. This segment has grown for us at a steady pace so we will continue to add solutions to meet these demands. We plan to recruit more SMEs whilst sharing our knowledge of our solutions and technology through training programs. With our newly solidified partnership with Fortinet, we are now able to offer secure networks and expect our Linksys HomeWRK solution to be well-received by large enterprises as their need to replicate corporate networks at home increases.

Are you planning to present products or solutions at the GITEX Technology Week? If so, which are they?

During the GITEX Technology Week, we will be showcasing the most premium solutions of our different segments. There will be a particular emphasis on our 5G solutions as the 5G infrastructures continue to expand in the Middle East. Guests will be able to demo a range of other business-led offerings including the Linksys Cloud Manager and Mesh WiFi solutions, as well as get to experience the Linksys App and its features first-hand. We’ll also be highlighting our newly announced Linksys HomeWRK solutions secured by Fortinet.

Tell us about Linksys’s “work from home” and networking devices and their demand

Enterprise-at-home is becoming a significant step in the evolution of workplace technology as working and learning from home is now more common globally than it ever was. This leads to an increasing need for reliable infrastructures to mitigate cybersecurity risks and maintain efficiency. Businesses want to replicate corporate networks by giving their employees access to the same resources as in the office. Our strategic alliance with Fortinet enables us to offer enterprise-grade connectivity and security, with unparalleled quality of service, to organizations that need to provide seamless and secure connectivity for their employees to efficiently work from home. The partnership will also address the issue of the homework gap among students as schools are re-opening with hybrid models for learning with the Linksys HomeWRK for Education.

Logitech is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of input and interface devices for personal computers (PCs) and other digital products. Loubna Imenchal, Head of Video Collaboration, Africa, Middle East, Turkey, and Central Asia, discusses key trends in video collaboration and the company’s plans for GITEX with The Integrator.

Tell us about the importance of video collaboration for organizations.

There is no doubt that organizations across all verticals have accelerated their digital transformation journey since COVID-19 hit. Hybrid models of operating have become the norm, and teams have been forced to work and collaborate in more innovative ways. As part of their broader transformation plans, and given the current scenario, organizations increasingly understand the value of video collaboration tools to keep teams connected and collaborate effectively — with each other, and with partners and clients.

Loubna Imenchal, Head of Video Collaboration, Logitech

In the current situation, with restrictions on people’s movement having an impact on the ability of organizations to collaborate, video collaboration tools have an important role to play in helping organizations execute their plans effectively, and they can overcome these obstacles by investing in the right video conferencing tools for their needs.

How is this playing out in the Middle East?

As the Middle East begins to emerge from the pandemic, we expect to see demand remain strong. While organizations will no doubt return to having some face-to-face meetings and limited business trips, video conferencing will remain a pillar of communications and hybrid work.

Organizations will also scrutinize the value of face-to-face meetings and business travel with more zeal than before, and management will be acutely aware that executives can take part in more video conferencing meetings than face-to-face meetings on a given day. The potential productivity gains and cost savings are enormous.

In terms of engendering a culture of collaboration, video conferencing tools are also an important tool for keeping your workforce active, engaged, and connected with their colleagues. This is important for people working remotely and can have an impact on an organization’s ability to retain talented staff.

What plans do you have for GITEX?

Logitech is excited to showcase a range of high caliber solutions at GITEX, with demand for collaboration tools remaining high across the region as organizations continue to embrace hybrid working models.

We will showcase our top video collaboration solutions at GITEX in conjunction with our partner Avientek, which is exhibiting in Hall 3, stand 8A.

Among the products on show will be Rally Bar, our next-generation portfolio of video conferencing solutions for small, medium, and large rooms. Rally Bar is a portfolio of appliance and PC-based solutions that work with today’s leading video conferencing services such as Microsoft Teams and Zoom.

We will also demonstrate Logitech Scribe, an AI-powered whiteboard camera for meeting rooms and classrooms. Compatible with leading services like Microsoft Teams and Zoom, Logitech Scribe broadcasts whiteboard content into video meetings with incredible clarity, virtually transporting everyone into the same room. In addition to exhibiting products on our partner’s stand, we will also hold meetings and 1-1 demonstrations at a dedicated meeting room in the Conrad hotel, close to Dubai World Trade Centre.

Any last thoughts to share?

Video collaboration has never been so important. Organizations across the region have experienced the importance of keeping their teams connected during the past two years, and there is a growing awareness of the advantages of using enterprise-grade solutions. Even as many people venture back to places of work and education, hybrid models are now an established mode of operations for many organizations, and we see continued high demand for solutions that aid collaboration.

We look forward to meeting with customers at GITEX to demonstrate the advantages of our newest innovations and how they can help companies boost efficiency, innovation, and employee and customer satisfaction.
