Countless shafts of lights jump out of hundreds of rectangle frames, their thousands of flashes and flickers, and their millions of hue blends. So candidly, the outdoor lives of humankind got immersed in this surreal radiance for as many years we can recall and the entire years to come.

No matter how much visual chaos has been created, the ever-growing display market attached to it values over $166 billion, and that is spread across a dozen industry verticals!

The display market has already redrawn our conventional angles of viewing and showing. Its current foray into newer markets appropriates steady expansion of LED in the commercial display sector to flexible display in consumer electronics. When it comes to studying display, there are three major market segments, which are display type, technology, and application. All of them have been occupied mostly by global corporations. Regional players also closely contest in this professional B2B market. Samsung, LG, Sharp NEC, Panasonic, Hitachi, BenQ, Epson are to name a few, who pose cross-vertical competition.

“Although North America contributes a large to the display market, the Asia-Pacific region forecasts the highest growth with an average of 11.7 percent in the next five years to come.”

Staunching Presence of Commercial Display in the Market

From healthcare to aviation, from retail to automobile, and from BFSI to defense, the commercial display has marked its solid presence. Concerning the commercial display market, it isn’t technological advancement that creates a huge impact but dependability on technology and its market acceptance. The B2B display market demands robust devices as they often get exposed to changing weather conditions or extensive use for long hours. Most hardware manufacturers and service providers concentrate on a specific area to have their dominance. Presumably, it gives them ease to handle market challenges.

Let’s look at key sectors and dominant market payers.

Healthcare Demands Clarity and Precision

The medical and healthcare sector is consistently in need of robust communication devices. The clarity and precision they offer directly Influence the decision of medical practitioners. When it comes to reviewing technical aspects of monitors and other display devices, their brightness, noise, viewing angle, and durability to withstand disinfectants are major considerations. Healthcare command centers and workspaces are also needed for high-end devices.

The global medical display market has been valued at $2052 million in 2019 and the estimated growth rate (CAGR) during 2020-2027 is 4.9 percent. Samsung, Barco, AG Neovo, PLANAR, Sharp NEC are the companies that invest and bring out competent technologies into the field besides tightly chasing the competition.

Healthcare Display Devices:

Hospital Administration Monitors

Self-Service Kiosk

Doctor Room Monitors

Dental Monitors

Multi-Modality Display Devices

Digital Disruption in Retail Display Sector

The retail display industry is more incandescent when it comes to evaluating the competition and technological advancements. Digital signages of advertising are flagbearers of growth in this sector. Whether it’s about interactive in-store posters or eye-catching out-of-home (OOH) advertisements, they are always within our short vicinity.

With the arrival of the newest and energy-efficient technologies such as OLED and micro-LED, the investments in high resolution (4K and 8K) and large-size (52 to 75 inches and above 75 inches) displays have increased tremendously. Be it a simple restaurant menu or a gigantic shopping festival display, devices at incredible capacities are produced and supplied by leading companies as well as local players.

Samsung Electronics dominates the market since 2009 with a market share of 23 percent and the following are LG (12 percent), SeeWo (6.1 percent), NEC (5.8 percent), Philips (4.2 percent). The global display market is valued at $38,444 million in 2018 and is forecasting growth by an average of 7.7 percent during 2019- 025.

Retail Display Devices

Signages (Outdoor and Indoor)

Video Wall

Interactive Displays

Infotainment Drives Automotive Display Market

“The global automotive display market is projected to reach USD 39.7 billion by 2027 from an estimated USD 18.4 billion in 2020, at a CAGR of 13% from 2021 to 2027,” says, a recent research report by Market Research Future (MRFR). Increasing demand for infotainment, reliable navigation systems, and the development of connected vehicles significantly driving the automotive display market. The capability of internal screens is enhanced as they could display internal temperatures of engines, tire pressure, and safety belt indications. The use of the screens to caste OTT platforms through smartphones is another area of improvement that took place recently.

One of the breakthroughs of the automotive display market is the availability of flexible display devices. Vehicle cockpit can’t approve of large or stiff installations and custom-designed screens can easily blend with a vehicle’s design. Along with energy-saving TFT-LCD technology, flexible displays capture the market and established dominance. By technology, demands are including high-resolution, large screen, and highly accurate in-touch technology, 3D technology, and IPS (In-panel Switching) technology.

Seeing the presence of major automotive manufacturers, Europe anticipates dominance in the automotive display market. France, Germany, and the U.K. are major contributors to the regional market. APAC is expected to register a remarkable growth rate over the forecast period. Delphi Technologies, Visteon Corporation, Magneti Marelli S.p.A, LG Display Co. Ltd, Nippon Seiki Co. Ltd, Qualcomm Technologies Inc, Continental AG, Robert Bosch GmbH, Panasonic Corporation, and 3M are the key players in the automotive sector.

Resurge of Aviation Display Market

Today’s airport terminals are quite more than facilities for air transportation. Apart from regular flight information display systems (FIDS), they harbor interactive wayfinding and entertainment solutions, digital posters, video walls, large-screen projections, and more. Some are kept by the retail outlets, restaurants, lounges set up inside the terminal complex. Not only display systems established their prominence presence in airport terminals but also in aircraft – enhancing in-flight interactivity.

The FIDS market had 4 percent of CAGR until December 2019. The COVID19 pandemic has created a huge economic slowdown and the aviation industry was the first one to take the shot. However, Market Watch reports a resurge of the FIDS market and estimates a good growth rate between 2020-25. AirIT, Dameral Systems International, NEC, Simpleway, and Gentrack are some of the key players in the market. LED, OLED, LEC are the main display technologies used.

Aviation-Focused Display Products:

FIDS

Airport Control Room Displays

Wayfinding Displays

Video Walls

Interactive Posters

Avionics Application Displays

In-Flight Entertainment

Consumer Electronics Rely on Technological Advancements

The display market pertaining to consumer electronics generates nearly 50 percent of the overall global display revenue. While appropriate the surge of smartphone and tablet sales to the growth rate of OLED would help us to recognize the driving force. Unlike commercial display, technology becomes the only crusader of growth and advancement. OLED technology offers high resolution and clarity on consumer electronic devices include wearables. Also, its challenges to face odd weather or temperature conditions are way too less than that of commercial display devices.

OLED technology anticipates 15 percent of CAGR in the coming years and the burgeoning m-commerce practices keep the pace of growth intact. Similar lines of commercial display, the Asia Pacific (APAC) region foresee a high rate of growth.

Consumer Electronic Display Products

Smartphones

Wearables

Cameras

Monitors

Appliances

Defense Display

Display installations on military vehicles, control rooms, and devices used by soldiers refer to defense display devices. These devices are extensively used for training, combat management, surveillance, and logistics and administration by the navy, army, coast guard, and others.

Major considerations when it comes to manufacturing display devices for military use are simplicity in operation, compact design, high-resolution, vibration and heat resistance, fit for harsh environmental conditions, and unbreakable. The major vendors of military display devices are Bluestone Technologies, Getac Technology Corporation, Panasonic Corporation, General Dynamics Corporation, Assured Systems Ltd., Aydin Displays, Crystal Group, General Digital, ZMicro, etc.

Defense Display Devices

Rugged Monitors

Military-Grade Work Stations

Standard Monitors

Rack-Mount Flip LCD Monitors

Waterproof Sealed LCD Monitors

Open Frame LCD Monitors

The growth and advancements of the display market were steady over two decades. While technological evolutions, i.e., CRT to LCD, LCD to LED, LED to OLED, helped to scale growth, the overlap and fusion of technology have also contributed to the expansion of industry verticals. The inception of digital signages not only unleashes market explosion but also created a competitive market environment. However, leading display companies decided to stick to their strongholds and increase market share. Some of them established decades-long supremacy in their territories. Most display vendors are from North America but the Asia Pacific remains the reservoir of economic growth for the upcoming years.

Samsung Gulf Electronics launched the Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 in the UAE. This new 2-in-1 Android tablet designed for people who want to do more on the go—from home to the office and everywhere in between. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 delivers an experience that helps you work smarter by keeping you operating at the highest levels.

Productivity with Samsung DeX and S Pen

With the Galaxy Tab S4, Samsung is bringing Samsung DeX to the tablet for the first time. When connected to the optional Book Cover Keyboard (sold separately) or launched from the Quick Panel, the Galaxy Tab S4 powers on Samsung DeX, giving users the option to switch from the Android interface to a desktop experience. With Samsung DeX, you can open multiple desktop-style windows for your Android apps, including the Microsoft Office suite, directly on the Galaxy Tab S4, and re-size them when needed. Drag and drop content between apps and use keyboard shortcuts and commands for efficiency. If more screen is needed, there is also an option to extend Samsung DeX to an external monitor with a compatible HDMI to USB-C multi-port adapter (not included).

Samsung’s S Pen comes in the box with the Galaxy Tab S4 to satisfy even more productive needs. It offers users a great way to express their creativity and communicate. They can take notes on the fly through the Screen-Off Memo feature, as well as navigate, translate and organize notes through Samsung Notes, and even send personalized texts through Samsung Live Message – all with the S Pen.

A Screen Fit for Any Job – or Movie

It’s easier to get more done when you have the right screen. Now you can enjoy a more immersive experience on a device you can take anywhere. While similar in size to the Galaxy Tab S3, the Galaxy Tab S4 sports narrower bezels to fit a large 10.5-inch display with Super AMOLED technology, as well as a 16:10 screen ratio with 2560×1600, 287 pixels per inch (PPI) resolution for vivid picture detail and true-to-life visuals. When it comes to audio, the Galaxy Tab S4 also comes with four speakers tuned by AKG and Dolby Atmos® immersive sound technology, which brings entertainment to life through moving audio that flows all around you. With Dolby Atmos, the Galaxy Tab S4 supports crisper dialogue, enveloping sound fields, maximized loudness without distortion, and consistent playback volume.

Enhanced Connectivity to Make Your Life Easier

The Galaxy Tab S4 also features new and improved capabilities designed to manage your connected devices and lifestyle. Samsung Flow allows users to manage all of their devices easily by connecting and transferring files, tasks and notifications seamlessly. Plus, the Galaxy Tab S4’s Daily Board3 allows you to view your favorite photos and everyday information such as the weather, calendar and time in one, easy-to-access place.

VMware announced an expanded partnership with Samsung to deliver a next generation unified mobile and desktop experience to solve mobile workforce challenges. As enterprise mobility becomes increasingly common, end-users struggle with disparate mobile and desktop experiences when using enterprise desktops, mobile applications and cloud services. Integration between VMware Horizon and Samsung Desktop Experience (DeX) will enable end-users to dock a Samsung Galaxy S8 smartphone and deliver to the device full Windows desktops and applications using a single set of credentials. On-the-go access to Windows, mobile and cloud applications will be delivered from VMware Workspace ONE through a common digital workspace experience. Whether stationary or mobile, Samsung Galaxy S8 end-users benefit from unified access and experience using a single mobile device that fits into a pocket.

“VMware and Samsung share a common vision of helping Galaxy S8 end-users experience the full capabiltiies of the device while delivering an elegant end-user experience,” said Sumit Dhawan, senior vice president and general manager, End-User Computing, VMware. “Our expanded partnership will further enable business end-users to remain productive by delivering a unifed digital workspace experience that offers continuity whether they are using the mobile device from a desk connected to a monitor, keyboard and mouse, or in the palm of their hands using touch and gesture interactions – elevating the experience of mobile workers to the next level.”

Samsung DeX redefines what a smartphone can do to keep mobile workers productive with just their smartphones. It will provide an Android-based, desktop-like experience that enables end-users to seamlessly access apps, edit documents, browse the web, watch videos, reply to messages and more, directly from the smartphone on a larger display, with the ability to use a keyboard and mouse. Samsung DeX will also provide an ultimate productivity environment with a completely redesigned Android UI optimized for use with a keyboard and mouse including multiple-resizable windows, contextual menus and a desktop version Web browser with Samsung Internet. With Samsung DeX, enterprise end-users can also be assured their smartphones and data are protected by the Samsung Knox security platform that is built into the smartphone.

Together with VMware Workspace ONE and VMware Horizon, the new Samsung Galaxy 8 smartphone with Samsung DeX can deliver a common digital workspace experience when end-users access their Windows desktops and applications in the office, or Windows, mobile and cloud applications on-the-go. The Workspace ONE solution integrates application and access management, unified endpoint management and virtual desktop and application delivery. This integration helps organizations evolve silo-ed cloud and mobile investments, and unify the end-user experience across devices using a platform-based approach. The end-user experience is further simplified and secured through a common identity framework using single sign-on authentication and corporate information is secured in the data center through Horizon or on the device using Samsung Knox and industry-leading solution, VMware AirWatch.

“The successful collaboration between Samsung and VMware over the years with VMware AirWatch has helped many customers across the globe embrace BYO and enterprise mobility,” said Kevin Gilroy, executive vice president and general manager, Commerical Division, Samsung. “This extension of our partnership into the delivery of virtual desktop and applications through digital workspaces with the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Samsung DeX will further customer choice in best-of-breed technology.”

VMware was recognized for the second consecutive year by IDC Marketscape for having the most complete mix of business and solution strategies and capabilities for delivering virtual desktops and applications through its VMware Horizon portfolio of solutions and services that includes VMware Horizon 7, Horizon Cloud and VMware App Volumes.

Samsung has announced the launch of its newest gaming monitor, the CFG70 curved monitor, which is designed specifically for professional gamers, includes enhanced picture quality and player-friendly features for a truly immersive gaming experience. The display was first introduced at the Gamescom 2016 and IFA 2016 conferences.

As the industry’s first curved gaming monitor to feature quantum dot technology, the CFG70 monitor (24- and 27-inch models) expresses brilliant and accurate colors across a 125 percent sRGB spectrum. This added luminance produces a 3,000:1 contrast ratio and amplifies previously-hidden gaming details in both light and dark settings. The monitor also employs an environmentally-safe, cadmium-free design. It is available at Samsung brand shops and leading retailers for a recommended price of AED 1,499 (24 inch) and AED 1,999 (27 inch).

Karan Chopra, Head of Display Solutions at Samsung Gulf Electronics added, “The UAE has a booming gaming industry. Gaming is increasingly being embedded into popular culture with events through the year including annual editions of Middle East Film & Comic Con (MEFCC). With the new curved monitor, we are giving gamers an even more immersive experience, enveloping their field of vision in the game, while not straining their eyes. ”

According to Abu Dhabi’s media free zone authority twofour54, the gaming sector in the Middle East and North Africa (Mena) is set to grow to US$4.4 billion by 2022.

By combining Samsung’s advanced motion blur reduction technology with its VA panel, the CFG70 is the first curved monitor to produce a 1 ms moving picture response time (MPRT). The rapid MPRT rate reduces display transitions between moving and animated objects, and in turn eliminates potential visual distractions.

The CFG70 also leverages integrated AMD FreeSync Technology over HDMI functionality to synchronize the screen’s 144 Hz refresh rate with users’ AMD graphics cards. This connectivity minimizes image tearing and input latency and stutter that can disrupt gameplay and escalate visual fatigue.

Samsung has equipped the CFG70 with a range of user-friendly gaming UX that drives more convenient and easily-accessible game management. The CFG70 includes a dedicated gaming interface with an intuitive settings dashboard to better allow gamers to modify and personalize their gameplay settings. Each CFG70 monitor also offers a series of hotkeys on the front and back of the display for users to easily adjust gameplay settings.

To further inspire gamer immersion and bring out the best in even the most complex game designs, including compatibility with the FPS, RTS, RPG and AOS genres, each CFG70 monitor undergoes rigorous pre-shipment factory calibration. This process optimizes various settings, including contrast ratios, black gamma levels for enhanced brightness and white balance levels for temperature management. As a result, gamers can enjoy a sharp and brilliant picture regardless of the game in play.

The CFG70’s “Super Arena” design, featuring industry-best 1,800R curvature and a 178-degree ultra-wide viewing angle, is formatted to match the natural curve of the human eye. Complementary sound-interactive LED lighting further creates a lifelike presentation and keeps users focused during the most paramount moments.

Additionally, the Japan Institute of Design Promotion (JDP) recently named the CFG70 as a recipient of its annual Good Design Awards, which honor technologies that “improve the quality of life, industry and society.” The JDP acknowledged the efficiency and performance of the CFG70’s advanced gaming interface and convenience-driving composition.

Samsung is bringing to GITEX Technology Week the largest virtual reality (VR) theatre in the region. Running at the Dubai World Trade Centre between October 16 to 20, GITEX Technology Week is the largest technology exchange and marketplace for Middle East and Africa.

A dedicated VR Theatre will be the highlight of Samsung’s presence at the event, showcasing to visitors the creative and entertainment capabilities of the Gear VR. As many as 32 4D motion chairs arranged in eight rows will form the VR theatre. The stand will adjoin a 360 cabin that will let visitors take 360-degree images of themselves using the Gear 360 camera. A digital pond showcases the IP68 water resistance feature of the Galaxy Note7 and accompanying S Pen. Product experts will also highlight to visitors the iris-scanning security feature of the device.

C. Purushothaman, Head of Marketing (Smartphones & Tablets), IT & Mobile Division at Samsung Gulf Electronics commented, “From an industry point of view, content creation agencies especially within the media sector stand to benefit greatly from VR. I am of the belief that all organizations need to experiment with VR to elevate brand experience. VR is enabling consumers to engage with brands like never before. Using the Gear 360, they can also create and share such content themselves. VR is finding uses not just in entertainment, but also medicine, training, education, to name a few. Dubai’s real estate sector with its pipeline of infrastructure projects stands to especially benefit from VR, with companies around the world already employing the technology to help consumers visualize how their projects would come to life. We also call on developers to cultivate compelling VR applications and continue to push the frontiers of technology.”

The Gear VR adds support for USB on-the-go (OTG), which allows third-party peripherals to connect to the experience. This is a new feature that developers can leverage to build new experiences on top of Gear VR, such as future input schemes, and is a potential area of innovation for Gear VR. The GearVRf API provides VR application developers with simplified access to Oculus SDK functionality, via the Java Native Interface and the GearVRf native library. The latest Gear VR is compatible with the Galaxy Note7 connecting using USB Type C, and to older models using an adaptor that switches to MicroUSB.

“GITEX is consistently growing as Dubai emerges as a global events hub with its international connectivity, ease of business and the first-mover advantage it has with the implementation of the latest technology. We are very excited to host Samsung and the region’s largest VR theatre at the event this year and hope to repeat these milestone successes in years to come,” added Trixie LohMirmand, Senior Vice-President, Exhibitions and Events Management, Dubai World Trade Centre.

Samsung will also have its other world-class consumer electronics on display at the event. Its pavilion will be located in Hall 6 – Stand 5 (MAC 6-5) at the Dubai World Trade Center.

Demand for seamless connection to the Internet of Things will drive wearable shipments to double by 2020, says a new Frost & Sullivan report prepared in collaboration with GITEX Technology Week.

Wearables are computing devices that can be worn as clothing or accessories – including smart watches, glasses, bands, cameras, and clothing. By recording, analysing, and communicating data, wearables can provide real-time contextual information to aid in decision-making and enhancing experiences.

Use cases include constant health and fitness updates, real-time transport tracking, and augmented reality enhancing construction sites and factory floors in manufacturing.

Thanks in part to growing GCC demand for wearables, the global shipments of wearables will grow from about 90 million in 2016 to over 200 million in 2020, according to the report.

“Smart wearables will rapidly advance in technology to replace smartphones by 2020, and provide a gateway for seamless citizen interaction with the Internet of Things and Smart Cities,” said Robert Scoble, a Silicon Valley insider speaking at GITEX Technology Week 2016.

Robert Scoble, who currently serves as Entrepreneur in Residence at augmented reality and virtual reality startup Upload VR, will be one of dozens of speakers at the GITEX Conference, and a headliner of GITEX Digital Marketing Monday on digital marketing innovations.

“The GCC, with its advancing Smart Cities, is well-positioned to be among global leaders in demonstrating how wearables can be optimised for hyper-connectivity. Smart wearables can deliver an enhanced experience that was only in the realm of sci-fi films, especially in verticals such as healthcare, transportation, marketing, and retail,” added Robert Scoble.

GITEX speakers addressing wearables will include Rafael Grossmann, the first surgeon to live-stream surgery with Google Glass, Shahid Azim, Co-Founder of medical wearables startup Quanttus, and Jonathan Reichental, CIO of Palo Alto, on the future of Smart Cities.

Smart Watches Dominate Wearables Growth
Globally, smart device manufacturers are looking to cash in on the smart wearables trend. Currently, the market is dominated by smart wristbands, at 51 per cent, and smart watches, at 41 per cent, but will become more diversified by 2020, according to research firm IDC.

Smart watches will dominate, accounting for more than 50 per cent of wearable shipments by 2020. Shipments of smart watches will grow by 69 per cent annually to 2020, with revenue accelerating faster than sales at 78 per cent annually, according to Frost & Sullivan.

Smart bands will remain a specialised market. Smart cameras, glasses, and clothing will see specialised growth – for example in athletics, or jobs in high-risk environments – before becoming more consumer friendly. Smart glasses will gain market traction in the next two to three years, with sales accelerating rapidly towards 2020, according to Frost & Sullivan.

While Apple has staked an early market lead in smart wearables, major technology brands such as Garmin, LG Electronics, Lenovo, and Samsung have seen double-digit shipment growth year-over-year, with strong potential in niche wearables, according to IDC analysis.

“The growing Samsung device ecosystem is one based on seamless connectivity and interoperability. Our smartwatches, including the recently-announced Gear S3, not only compliment this universe but adds an additional layer of functionality and mobility,” Mohammed Gharaibeh, Head of B2B for Information and Mobility at Samsung Gulf Electronics.

“As a fashion statement, activity tracker, personal assistant, music player and navigator, our smartwatches are transcending conventional confines of what a watch should be,” added Mohammed Gharaibeh.

GCC Set for Strong Wearables Growth

The Middle East is a growing market for wearable manufacturers and distributors, thanks to high mobile penetration in the GCC region, according to the Frost & Sullivan report.

“Dubai aims to be one of the world’s smartest cities, and wearable innovators will look to the city for how wearables can fully realise the potential of the Internet of Things. GITEX will be a showcase for how seamless connectivity can transform daily lives – across mobile operators, wearable developers, and startups,” said Trixie LohMirmand, Senior Vice-President, Exhibitions and Events Management, Dubai World Trade Centre.

Wearables will be in the spotlight at GITEX Tech Watch, showcasing the latest innovative and immersive technology. Global entrepreneurs in the wearables sector can seek funding and partnerships at the GITEX Startups Movement, which aims to be the world’s most global startup event in 2016. One of the leading wearable startups participating is Mosaikx, a UAE-based company that has launched the world’s first wearable smart voice recorder.

Aiming to boost the reach of startups will be accelerators and incubators such as Oasis500 from Jordan, the BADIR Programme for Science and Technology and InspireU by STC from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the Skolkovo Foundation from Russia, the Dubai Technology Entrepreneurship Centre, and the Japan External Trade Organisation.

Samsung has appointed Aptec, an Ingram Micro company as the official distributor for the Gulf region for its wide range of enterprise-focused printing solutions.

Sherif Fahim, Head of Printing Solutions at Samsung Gulf Electronics commented, “We are certain that Aptec’s geographical coverage, decades of experience, extensive customer base and value-added services, especially within the Gulf, will create a whole new range of possibilities for our printing technology. Primed to deliver substantial cost savings to businesses and boost their mobility and productivity, our printing solutions range from hardware to business applications.”

Bahaa Salah, managing director of Aptec, Gulf and Near East region, added, “This partnership with Samsung presents a great and exciting opportunity to further enhance and enrich our enterprise solutions offerings to the channel. As a key point in the value chain, we strive to create sales and profitability opportunities for vendors and resellers through unique marketing programs, logistics services, technical support, financial services, and product aggregation and distribution.”

Samsung’s growing printing solutions portfolio includes the latest in the ProXpress series.
