Aruba, a Hewlett-Packard Enterprise company, provides secure edge-to-cloud networking solutions and AI-based services to businesses. The Integrator engaged Aruba’s high-profile executives, Amol Mitra (VP and GM – Worldwide – SMB) and Jacob Chacko (Regional Director – ME, KSA, and SA), in a conversation that focused on the company’s latest offerings for the SMB sector.

Walk us through the newest and innovative solutions that Aruba has introduced to the small and medium businesses (SMBs) in the market

AMOL MITRA: Most SMBs do not have IT staff within the organization. So, technology products and solutions need to be easy to use, plug and play, affordable, and meet the security requirements of these businesses. Thus, we decided, when we embarked on this journey, to deliver customized solutions for SMBs.

We created a new brand, ‘Aruba Instant On’, that differentiates our SMB offering from our enterprise offering. Under the brand, we introduced a set of (APs), switches, accessories like transceivers, and a mobile app through which businesses can manage and configure the entire network environment.

With the need for increased speed, capacity, and scalability, we initially launched Aruba Instant On APs three years ago, now featuring Wi-Fi 6, that delivers blazing-fast performance, greater capacity to handle more devices simultaneously, and greater performance. These APs are perfect for small businesses with expanding mobile, cloud, and IoT requirements.

We will continue to lead innovation in the future and deliver more high-performance, secure access points, switches, and technology that is purpose-built for SMBs. Aruba Instant On portfolio is ideal for Small Businesses/Offices and institutions in hospitality, healthcare, and education.

Elaborate on the competitive advantages and scalability that SMEs find after turning to Aruba’s network technologies

AMOL MITRA: Besides vendors who compete with us in the enterprise space, there are other specific SMB networking vendors in the marketplace. So, we realized that in order to create a competitive advantage, we not only need to create brand differentiation but also create product and solution differentiation as well.

When compared to the competition, I believe the following four areas are where our value proposition and differentiation lie:

The first is “ease of use,” which is hugely important in this marketplace. Besides the cloud-based app, we

Amol Mitra (VP and GM – Worldwide – SMB) -Aruba

also included intelligent automation through artificial intelligence (AI) to make sure that customers don’t need to spend a lot of time configuring or managing the product

The second is security. We have made sure that our products have hardened security. We have taken our enterprise security feature set and replicated it into our SMB solutions

Next, this business is channel-led and built through our broad channel ecosystem. So we have made sure that our channel partners are engaged and enabled from a pre-sales and a post-sales perspective to deliver whatever support and service is required by customers

And finally, everything we do is centered around our customers. We build features that are tailored to the needs of individual customers and SMB businesses. For example, if you have a small coffee shop and you want to have a guest network that is segmented from the administrative network and the staff network, it is a one-click capability that we provide

Give insights into Aruba’s latest undertaking concerning hybrid work and employee collaboration and their success

AMOL MITRA: Our products are inherently built for a hybrid work environment. We have a specific configuration for users who work from home, office, or in a hybrid mode. With a one-click button, you can configure it for a hybrid work environment. All this is held in the cloud and managed through a mobile app.

With Aruba’s products, a user can have the same environment, configuration, and policy management irrespective of the workplace. There is zero configuration change that is required with our products.

Discuss Aruba’s Middle East plans and business strategies for the SMB sector in the upcoming years

JACOB CHACKO: We have been at the forefront of innovation in the enterprise networking segment, helping large enterprises meet their connectivity, security, and financial requirements across campus, branch, data center, and remote worker environments. Our strategy is to extend our leadership in the Enterprise sector to the SMB segment by providing them with ‘enterprise grade’, feature-rich solutions at an attractive price point, that are simple, secure, and easy to deploy. Aruba’s SMB networking solutions deliver intuitive management, automated intelligence, and security features to save time and gain a competitive edge.

Aruba Instant On is a big technology focus for us when it comes to SMBs. They are wi-fi access points (APs) purpose-built for small businesses that just work—reliably, securely, and remarkably simple, right out of the box. SMBs can create “Always On” networks with little to no IT support required. It’s easy to set up and manage remotely with a cloud-based mobile app.

Our go-to-market strategy is through our SMB-focused partners and distributors. Stocking is a key area of focus for us when it comes to SMBs. We are making concerted efforts to build a strong supply chain network to ensure that our partners have stocks readily available at any given point in time.

What is special this year for Aruba GITEX for SMBs?

JACOB CHACKO: At GITEX Global 2022, Aruba will be exhibiting under the theme “Making Connections, Anywhere” – creating the connections that power businesses and the world. In its 13th appearance at the event, the company will demonstrate its cloud-native approach to helping customers meet their connectivity, security, and financial requirements across campus, branch, data center, and remote worker environments covering all aspects of wired, wireless LAN, and wide area networking (WAN). At the event, Aruba will demonstrate its latest technologies addressing the digital transformation needs of regional enterprises including Wi-Fi 6E and cloud-managed networking, SD-WAN & SASE, Aruba User Experience Insight, and Network-as-a-Service (NaaS).

We invite SMB company executives to visit us at stand number H7-A1, at GITEX to explore our midsize business cloud-managed networking solutions that deliver fast, reliable, and scalable wired and wireless connectivity. Our technology experts will help SMBs rightsize their networks based on their business needs and space, and also provide demos of Aruba Instant On, designed for providing great wi-fi coverage and blazing-fast speeds.

Sailesh Malhotra, General Manager – GCC at Geidea shares the company’s expansion plans in the UAE.

How well did you persuade customers with your unique products at Seamless Middle East 2022?

At Seamless, we have been able to highlight Geidea at a very large scale and received an overwhelming response. We have well highlighted the value of Geidea to all our customers including merchants, banks, and other fintech companies.

Speak about the businesses that you have interacted with and the industry verticals Geidea would be focusing on in the upcoming years.

We want to focus on all Industry verticals – retail, F&B, utilities government and B2B business. We want to play a very large role in the supply chain management business as well. We see a large role of Geidea in converting cash to card and specifically in supply chain management business, We wish to replace that with a corporate purchasing card (card on file) and Geidea being the transaction acquirer.

Sailesh Malhotra – General Manager – GCC – Geidea

How do you deal with the competition and what edge ahead Geidea has against its competitors?

We would not focus too much on the competition but values we deliver. Our value proposition is very strong and simple – make payments easier at a cheaper cost by bringing the best technology to both the smallest and largest merchant in the market.

What about Geidea’s collaborations with financial organizations, mainly banks in the region?

One of the notable bank partnership has been with the First Abu Dhabi Bank (FAB). It has a fintech spinoff by the name of Magnati and we have signed up with them as a PSP. We have a few more partnership conversations going on in the region in Kuwait, Qatar and Oman for similar arrangements across multiple products. We will announce these shortly.

Tell us about the expansion plans you have in the middle east region

We want to go pan MENA. However, the selection of countries will be based on regulatory and technology availability / requirement. As of now, our focus is on the established markets, i.e., Egypt, UAE, and Saudi Arabia – we are doing phenomenally well in Saudi.

Do you collect user data as part of the business? If so, where do you keep it and handle it?

We collect information and follow all the standard requirements of Central Banks in the country of operation. We are very rigid and maniacal about following regulatory requirements and ensuring all customer data is well protected. We have our own data centers are these are closely monitored by our team. We follow and ensure all payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCIDSS) are followed and we stay compliant.

Written by: Ram Narayanan, Country Manager at Check Point Software Technologies, Middle East

Supply chain attacks aren’t new. If the past couple of years have taught businesses anything, it’s that the impact of supply chain cyber attacks is now, universal, from the fallout of the SolarWinds software breach, to the exposed Apache Log4j vulnerability and Kaseya last year. Unfortunately when such supply chain attacks hit smaller businesses who are usually the suppliers to larger enterprises, their impact is especially prohibitive.

For SMBs already feeling the prolonged impact of the pandemic, the added pressure of dealing with sophisticated and frequent cyber attacks in real time, are a heavy burden, as they try to protect their business against financial, legal and reputational damage, as well as their own suppliers and larger clients’ security. It is now more important than ever for SMBs to implement strict security hygiene and effective cybersecurity processes to ensure their business is prepared for the event of cyber attacks happening.

SMBs as an indirect avenue of cyber attacks

The reality is threat actors have taken advantage not only of the now-entrenched remote working model to target organisations, but also the usual limits preventing SMBs from bulking up on their cyber security defenses, mainly lack of budget and expertise. SMBs often do not have a dedicated IT or security department, meaning with no in-house security expertise and reduced focus on security patching, these companies are easier to socially engineer and infiltrate. Adding to this, SMBs usually have employees doing multiple roles, and thus a wider access to valuable areas of the business and information is given to them, and so if breached, they pose a threat to multiple areas within the business.

Ram Narayanan, Country Manager at Check Point Software – ME

Threat actors often target SMBs as low hanging fruit for their vital role in supply chains. This is especially so as such attacks wreak havoc on not only one organization but entire businesses within the supply networks. By leveraging tactics such as phishing, cybercriminals gain access to an organization to launch a malware attack, steal data and credentials or instigate a ransomware.

The key factor to preventing cyberattacks is threat prevention. With minimal time and lack of cyber expertise or manpower, SMBs must adopt a prevention mindset to minimise potential cyber attacks and threats.

Why cybersecurity readiness is paramount for SMBs

Beyond the immediate financial impact and reputational blow as a trustworthy, reliable partner, SMBs can also face legal or regulatory repercussions, operational disruption, flow-on costs for system remediation and cyberattack response, customer churn, and the loss of competitive advantage that can make or break a smaller business. In fact, a tarnished reputation as an avenue of attack can be even more detrimental to an SMB organisation, as the loss of trust with a larger organisation could mean a loss of potential business and revenue down the line with them or other new, potential customers.

How SMBs can prevent supply chain attacks

By applying stronger cyber defences, SMBs are in a position to provide larger organisations with assurance that larger companies they supply to will not be compromised via the SMB partner or third-party vendor.

Whilst there are multiple means to prevent such supply chain attacks, the first step is to have good software capable of covering the entire company, protecting the company’s endpoints and devices, supported by regular backups so that, in the event of a cyberattack, they have the possibility of restoring all the data.

A viable option for SMBs is to also consider engaging an experienced Managed Security Service Provider (MSSP), who will have the skilled resources, updated security software and experienced expertise to monitor for and analyse threats on behalf of the SMB player. This is especially useful for SMBs who have neither the time nor resources to adequately enforce threat detection and response.

Partnering with a cybersecurity expert equipped with best-in-class security and scalable solution such as Check Point Software can put SMBs in good stead to protect against the most sophisticated attacks and generate trust among larger potential players.

“Manufacturers had faced skill gap to go digital-first and most companies in the sector handled work through traditional means, until recently. However, digital transformation is no longer a choice but a necessity,” says Tariq Halawani, Executive Director – Enterprise Solutions at Microsoft UAE, during a media roundtable organized as part of the Global Manufacturing and Industrialisation Summit (GMIS) held in Dubai Exhibition Center at Expo 2020 site.

He adds, “In the recovery of the COVID-19 pandemic, every enterprise customer wants to go digital and skill their workforce to embrace digital. A few sectors such as automobile and pharmaceutical were faster in the process in the pre-pandemic era but now, everybody is eager to catch up with the modern technologies include digital transformation, cloud computing, and AI.”

Microsoft presents solutions focusing on safety and security to workforces, agility at work, customer interactions, supply chain, and sustainability at GMIS. It claims success in creating tie-ups for big-scale digital transformation contracts with major utility providers, government organizations, oil and gas corporations, pharmaceutical companies, logistic service providers, and construction networks.

The company attributes its strength to its decade-long presence in the UAE and the reputation gained over these years. Although Microsoft has built long-sustaining relationships with large enterprises via big platforms, it also focuses on small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and is ready to tailor services based on their needs seeing the volume of SMEs operating from the UAE.

Logitech, which was recently ranked number-1 worldwide in video conferencing hardware by Synergy Research, is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of input and interface devices for personal computers (PCs) and other digital products. Loubna Imenchal, Head of Video Collaboration, Africa, Middle East, Turkey, and Central Asia, Logitech discussed the importance of video collaboration with The Integrator at GITEX Technology Week 2021.

How was the event and what outcome do you foresee it?

At GITEX, we showcased our top video collaboration solutions for SMBs and large enterprises in conjunction with our partner Avientek. The event is very important for us to demonstrate our video collaboration solutions and it also gives our partners the chance to meet with end-users.

It has been a long time since we met customers face-to-face or attended any of these events due to COVID-19 so it was a great experience to reconnect with the market, partners, customers, and our peers. We saw a very positive reaction to our solutions at the event.

Loubna Imenchal, Head of Video Collaboration, META and Central Asia

How do you evaluate the customer reactions to Logitech Rally Bar and other solutions?

Enterprises are keen on adopting hybrid models of work and they need the best video collaboration solutions to efficiently connect and coordinate with their workforce. That’s why we brought out Rally Bar, our next-generation portfolio of video conferencing solutions for small, medium, and large rooms. Rally Bar is a portfolio of appliance and PC-based solutions that work with today’s leading video conferencing services such as Microsoft Teams and Zoom.

We also demonstrated Logitech Scribe, an AI-powered whiteboard camera for meeting rooms and classrooms. Compatible with leading services like Microsoft Teams and Zoom, Logitech Scribe broadcasts whiteboard content into video meetings with incredible clarity, virtually transporting everyone into the same room.

With Logitech Scribe, AI enables the device to render the user invisible, so that they don’t get in the way of the content they are creating on the whiteboard. It’s a truly unique product. It’s ideal for education and we’re excited about bringing it to the Middle East.

Which verticals are especially important for Logitech in terms of video collaboration?

The education sector can benefit hugely from video collaboration solutions. With Rally Bar Mini, we want to help both the educators and students have seamless classroom sessions.

Most schools and colleges were not prepared for the pandemic but the learning process can’t be stopped either. As a leading solution provider, we felt responsible to provide the technology and solutions to facilitate collaboration and provide ultimate flexibility in engagements. We hope Logitech Rally Bar and Logitech Scribe will become the future of teaching and learning.

Speak about how small, medium, and large enterprises can make use of these products

Video collaboration has never been so important. Organizations across the region have experienced the importance of keeping their teams connected during the past two years, and there is a growing awareness of the advantages of using enterprise-grade solutions. Even as many people venture back to places of work and education, hybrid models are now an established mode of operations for many organizations, and Logitech sees continued high demand for solutions that aid collaboration.

The Visa Back to Business global research study has surveyed SMB owners and their customers since the onset of the global pandemic. The vast majority (88%) of SMBs in the UAE are optimistic about the future of their business. This includes 64% (compared to 50% globally) who are very optimistic, which is the highest proportion of all markets surveyed. Nearly half (49% vs. 40% globally) of SMBs in the UAE say accepting contactless payments is among their top investment areas to meet consumer expectations. The majority (84% vs. 74% globally) of SMBs in the UAE believe that customers will continue to prefer contactless payments as much or more than they do today.

Nearly all (92%) consumers in the UAE say COVID-19 have permanently changed their payment habits (compared to 68% globally). Nearly three in four (73%) UAE consumers would not shop at a store that does not accept contactless payments (compared to 44% globally). One in three (33% vs. 21% globally) UAE consumers have not used cash in the last week, the second-highest among all markets.

More than half (56% vs. 33% globally) of UAE consumers say they are at least somewhat more likely to shop in person compared to last summer, the highest among all markets.

Unlocking Access to the Digital Economy

Recognizing that greater digitization of commerce can bring enormous benefits to small businesses, Visa has continued to deepen and localize its commitment to SMBs in the UAE over the last 18 months to help them revitalize and reinvent their businesses.

Visa claimed, it has:

been working with several UAE banks to pilot Tap to Phone solutions that make it easier for local merchants to accept payments using only an Android smartphone;

launched ADCB Pace Pay – UAE’s first virtual point of sale (POS) payment terminal with ADCB on both android and iOS platforms;

rolled out the “Rapid Seller Onboarding” to enable SMBs to accept digital payments from their customers in-store/at point-of-sale or online within just seven working days;

And conducted targeted studies such as Small Business Recovery and launched the Stay Secure campaign – in collaboration with DED and Dubai Police – intending to understand regional SME painpoints and provide actionable insights to small businesses.

“With an 18-month view into the pandemic now, we have seen that small businesses that have embraced digital commerce and cross-border selling have generally weathered the pandemic and that seemingly small pivots toward digital commerce can continue to make the difference between a small business surviving and thriving,” said Shahebaz Khan, Visa’s General Manager for the UAE.

Methodology: Visa Back to Business Study

The Visa Back to Business Study: 5th Edition, was conducted by Wakefield Research between June 15-28, 2021, among 2,250 small business owners at companies with 100 employees or fewer in Brazil, Canada, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Russia, Singapore, United Arab Emirates, and the United States.
