By: Rick Vanover, Senior Director of Product Strategy at Veeam Software

Veeam is expanding its portfolio of products to include our newest offering, Veeam Backup for Salesforce, which eliminates the risk of losing Salesforce data and metadata due to human error, integration issues, and other Salesforce data loss scenarios.

As Salesforce continues to be one of the most utilized CRMs in the world because of its advanced account, contact management, and customization options, this new offering from Veeam, which continues to be a market leader in Modern Data Protection, enables organizations to deploy a backup environment on-premises, in AWS, in Microsoft Azure and more. Veeam provides complete access and control of Salesforce data and metadata, as well as providing powerful, rapid-recovery capabilities for IT departments and Salesforce administrators. This includes granular and bulk data recovery of Salesforce records, hierarchies, fields, and files.

Conducted on Veeam’s behalf by an independent research firm, the Veeam Salesforce Protection Trends Report 2022 surveyed 800 unbiased IT leaders and implementers around the world. This report found that there isn’t just one reason to back up Salesforce. Those surveyed believe there are a lot of reasons, and collectively, those reasons equate to a lot of issues that can go wrong within a Salesforce environment. These include human error from various users – administrators, developers, general users, or even Salesforce itself – that can lead to Salesforce data loss or corruption. Many of these reasons are consistent with the same kinds of risks that face other IT platforms, including best practices and regulatory mandates, cyber security concerns, errors caused by application integrations, or even malicious or accidental data corruption. All of these reasons lead to the necessity of having Salesforce backups in place.

Although IT professionals overwhelmingly agree that Salesforce data loss is inevitable within an organization, they tend to rarely back it up. Mass data imports are common for most organizations that use Salesforce, and these imports are the number one reason for data corruption and deletion, and they’re handled by the professionals that are hired to keep your Salesforce data safe. Everything from overprivileged users to developers not checking code before moving data to production can play a part in why organizations need to be responsible for their own data.

Whether there’s a mistake made with the data loader or third-party integration causes an issue, Veeam’s easy-to-use user interface helps users resolve issues and retrieve data in just a few clicks.

Key capabilities of NEW Veeam Backup for Salesforce include:

Salesforce native: Purpose-built to create backups and restore Salesforce data and metadata

Fast and flexible recovery: Restore Salesforce records, hierarchies, fields, files, and metadata

Secure data: Run a backup environment anywhere, on-premises, or in the cloud (AWS, Microsoft Azure, etc.)

Custom scheduling: Set granular backup schedules and retention settings at the object level

Simplified management: Manage several Salesforce instances from one console

Incremental changes: With incremental sync and flexibility scheduling, you can back up your Salesforce data and metadata almost continuously

Written by: Edwin Weijdema, Global Technologist, Veeam Software

Ransomware as a trend will continue to affect businesses across the world – with attack types and tactics from cybercriminals evolving all the time. As attacks get more sophisticated, so do the consequences of falling victim to ransomware and the complexity of the clean-up.

The stakes are therefore higher than ever for businesses when it comes to protecting against ransomware attacks. Organizations need to understand the emerging trends that we will see gather speed, and prepare their defenses for the ransomware onslaught.

Make Your Business Insurable: The tension between insurers and businesses affected by ransomware is mounting. In EMEA we have already seen global insurance giant AXA announce that it will stop writing cyber-insurance policies in France that reimburse customers for extortion payments made to ransomware criminals. With insurers overwhelmed and frustrated by ransomware claims, underwriters will tighten up their policies to ensure clients are meeting predetermined conditions such as investing in appropriate cybersecurity and employee training before paying out.

Watch Out for Triple Extortion: This technique designed to make businesses pay more and pay faster involves extending the attack to the victim’s customers and partners. Triple extortion involves a third element – directing the attack beyond its initial target, using multi-layered extortion techniques to harm the victim’s customers and partners.

Minimize the Threat Within: Various studies suggest that over 60% of data breaches and cybersecurity incidents are caused by insider threats. hygiene is the first line of defense for an organization. Using two-factor authentication and restricting file access to only those who need it are ways of limiting the amount of damage a single user can do if security is compromised intentionally or unintentionally. Furthermore, training and education are vital to making sure employees are confident in identifying and reporting potential attacks.

Enforce the Law: Law enforcers are trying to bridge the imbalance between risk and reward for cybercriminals. Cybercriminals can make huge sums of money with little or no threat of prosecution. This will and has to change. However, given the borderless nature of cybercrime, governments must agree on an international legal framework for punishing cybercrime. Until then legal action will mainly be directed toward the victims rather than the criminals. Many governments are debating whether they should make ransomware payments illegal, so businesses resist the temptation to pay ransoms – cutting off cybercriminals’ income supply. Moreover, cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, commonly viewed as a hacker’s dream, actually have the potential to help law enforcers bring criminals to justice. Digital ledgers like Blockchain make it easier to ‘follow the money as records cannot be altered or deleted. Therefore, once criminals turn their cryptocurrency into “real money,” the digital ledger can theoretically unmask them.

Protect Your Data: Organisations must consult with their technology partners about deploying modern data protection solutions that can detect, mitigate and remediate ransomware attacks. Data must be backed up and recoverable across physical, virtual, cloud, SaaS, and Kubernetes so that in the event of a ransomware attack, businesses can remediate and recover quickly rather than being forced into paying the ransom.

As well as implementing modern data protection solutions, businesses must prioritize improving digital hygiene levels across their entire employee base. Employee education and awareness training can help to create a more digitally secure culture across the organization. A ‘human firewall’ combined with the right technology can help organizations prepare themselves for the ransomware attacks that will inevitably come their way this year and beyond.

Veeam Data Protection Trends Report 2022 finds that 89 percent of organizations are not protecting data sufficiently. Veeam Software, a provider of backup, recovery, and data management solutions, also found that 88% of IT leaders expect data protection budgets to rise at a higher rate. An official release state that the report is based on a survey of more than 3,000 IT decision-makers and global enterprises.

Anand Eswaran, Chief Executive Officer at Veeam said, “Data volumes and platform diversity will continue to rise, and the cyber-threat landscape will expand. So, CXOs must invest in a strategy that plugs the gaps they already have and keeps pace with rising data protection demands.”

Key findings from the Veeam Data Protection Trends Report 2022 include:

The data protection gap is widening: Respondents stated that their data protection capabilities cannot keep pace with the demands of the business, with 89% reporting a gap between how much data they can afford to lose after an outage versus how frequently data is backed up.

Businesses face a data protection emergency: To close the gap between data protection capabilities and this growing threat landscape, organizations will spend around 6% more annually on data protection than broader IT investments.

Businesses have an availability gap: 90% of respondents confirmed they have an availability gap between their expected SLAs and how quickly they can return to productivity. This has risen by 10% since 2021

Data remains unprotected: Despite backup being a fundamental part of any data protection strategy, 18% of global organizations’ data is not backed up — therefore, completely unprotected

Human error is far too common: Technical failures are the most frequent cause of downtime with an average of 53% of respondents experiencing outages across infrastructure/networking, server hardware, and software. 46% of respondents experienced cases of an administrator configuration error, while 49% were hindered by accidental deletion, overwriting of data, or corruption caused by users

Protecting remote workers: Only 25% of organizations utilize orchestrated workflows to reconnect resources during a disaster, while 45% run predefined scripts to reconnect resources running remotely in the event of downtime and 29% manually reconfigure user connectivity

Economic drivers remain critical: When asked about the most important factors when purchasing an enterprise data solution, 25% of IT leaders are motivated by improving the economics of their solution

Kinda Baydoun, Manager of Channels & Distribution – Middle East, Veeam speaks to The Integrator on Veeam’s SME-specific data protection solutions and channel strategies.

What solutions does Veeam present to its enterprise customers in the region? Tell us also about your experience at GITEX.

Veeam offers modern data protection solutions to customers across the enterprise portfolio. Another one is cloud solutions include Backup-as-a-Service (BaaS) with very reliable and simple recovery standards.

At GITEX, we held a live demonstration of these latest innovations. Besides, we showcased the ransomware protection solutions we offer as it is one of the hot topics in the post-pandemic era. We offer robust and solid solutions for ransomware protection to help our customers from data loss and financial risks. Our demonstrations also included: the hybrid cloud acceleration to help our customers protect their workloads when moving to the cloud, which is critical as cloud adoption is rapidly growing in the region. Moreover, on our stand, we demonstrated Kasten (acquired by Veeam back in 2020) which is a data protection solution that is purpose-built for Kubernetes environments.

Elaborate about the data management solutions Veeam offers

At Veeam, we ease customer challenges by offering seamless and comprehensive data management and mobility solutions, across the public and private cloud with 100 percent data portability. Wherever this data is kept, we ensure it is protected even while it moves from one environment to another.

We presented VMware Orchestrator, with which our customers can automate disaster recovery planning as well as help them meet the objectives of DRI for business continuity and compliance. Similarly, we had recently acquired Kasten, which facilitates easy-to-use data backup and recovery.

Excellent, thank you for giving us comprehensive input on your solutions. What is your regional strategy and which are the industries you focus on?

We wish to focus on all industry verticals and our solutions are also made to fit most industries. We are getting requests from all verticals as data is becoming very precious and needs to be protected. It is important for all businesses including telecom, banks, oil and gas, hospitality, etc.

We have a very solid SMB customer base and they raise high demands for stable and solid solutions.

Being the Manager of Channel and Distribution in the Middle East, what are your priorities?

I have been in this role for the past six months and my priority is to evaluate our current channel ecosystem and segment this into four categories, which takes into account the size of the channel partner from a VEEAM revenue perspective vs. their level of commitment. The channel ecosystem consists of our partners, distributors, and service providers who provide growth and reach for Veeam products. As I come from a channel background, I have deep knowledge about the market. So, my focus also is to onboard some new names in the market, especially in the Cloud Service Provider (CSP) space.

Tell us how did the COVID-19 Pandemic impact Veeam’s business?

The pandemic had created an unpleasant situation for all of us. At Veeam, we had orchestrated a shift in our approach from centralization to decentralization because most of our customers mandated their employees to work from home or work remotely. We had quickly responded to our customers’ needs. Thus, it didn’t take a toll on our business operations.

Veeam, one of the cloud solutions providers, announces its technology predictions report for 2022 and it engages AI, cloud, and cybersecurity, privacy laws, and several other important topics on the prediction. Danny Allan, CTO and Senior VP of Product Strategy, and Claude Schuck, Regional Director – Middle East, at Veeam, together made comments on the topics.

The following are the predictions made by Danny Allan:

Acquisitions will stagnate as company valuations outstrip available assets

In 2021, global M&A activity reached new highs aided by low-interest rates and high stock prices. In 2022, we will see that momentum shift. Larger acquisitions will be few and far between as company valuations continue to rise. Only well-established, cash-rich companies will have the money required to make new purchases. The higher purchase threshold will make it harder for medium- and small-sized companies to grow and evolve, giving the advantage to larger, established firms.

Danny Allan, CTO and Senior VP of Product Strategy

AI and automation will replace entry-level jobs in the finance, healthcare, legal and software industries

The talent shortage will leave many jobs unfilled, making way for the advancement of artificial intelligence and automation to fill new roles. We have seen technology begin its takeover in the service industry with the introduction of robotic waiters during the pandemic. In 2022, we will see AI and automation capable of filling positions in other hard-hit sectors like the finance, healthcare, legal, and software industries. These developments will mostly affect entry-level positions, such as interns, making it harder for recent graduates entering the workforce to gain job experience in the future.

Tech’s labor market will be met with big money and big challenges

The COVID-19 economy – and the subsequent great resignation – throughout the last two years certainly made its mark in the tech industry. As we continue to see turnover and lower employee retention, tech salaries will begin to grow in 2022 to incentivize talent to stay. I see this causing an interesting dynamic, presenting bigger challenges, especially to the folks in the startup and VC world. The bigger tech giants are the ones who can meet the high dollar demand and deliver benefits for a competitive workforce. It will be interesting to see in the years ahead what this does for innovation, which tends to come from the hungry startups where people work for very little for a long time. We could very well see a resurgence of tech talent returning to the “old guard” companies to meet their needs for stable (and large) salaries, forgoing the competitive, hard-knocks of startups that could cause skills and talent gap that lasts for years to come.

New privacy-focused legislation will shift attention to data sovereignty clouds

With increased focus on General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) regulating data protection and privacy in the EU and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) enhancing privacy rights and consumer protection for Californians, other states and countries are facing pressure to enact comprehensive data privacy legislation. As this continues in 2022, I expect we’ll see much more focus on data sovereignty clouds to keep data within nations or a certain physical location. This is a far more specified cloud model that we’re starting to see in EMEA with Gaia-X. Some will see this as an obstacle, but once implemented, this will be a good thing as it puts consumer privacy at the core of the business strategy.

Containers will become mainstream to support the cloud explosion of 2021

Businesses wrongly predicted that employees would return to the office, as normal, in 2021. Instead, remote working continued, and companies were forced to develop long-term remote working strategies to ensure efficiency, sustainability and to retain employees seeking flexibility. This remote work strategy demanded cloud-based solutions, resulting in an explosion of cloud service adoption. To meet this moment, containers will become mainstream in 2022, making the generational shift to the cloud much easier and more streamlined for organizations.

The following are the predictions made by Claude Schuck:

Every enterprise in the Middle East looking to build a strategy around Modern Data Protection should keep the three important pillars in mind – Cloud, Security, and Containers. Businesses need to have a good understanding of what the cloud brings to an organization and why it is important. Secondly, before the pandemic, we had a centralized office where employees were all in one place. With decentralization now, the boundaries of the organization have become invisible. Data is all over the place, necessitating a need for a comprehensive security strategy to safeguard all entry points. And finally, we see an increased interest in Kubernetes as a critical piece of an enterprise’s cloud infrastructure. This has created a new area around container-native data protection that needs addressing.

Claude Schuck, Regional Director – Middle East

Accelerated adoption of Cloud technologies

Although the cloud is not yet mainstream in the region, adoption is expected to witness significant growth in the Middle East as enterprises begin to “trust” in-country offerings with the big public cloud players like Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services that have opened data centers in the Middle East. Gartner forecasts end-user spending on public cloud services in the MENA region to grow 19% in 2022. Another big trend we see is that many governments across the Middle East are creating their own ‘Government Cloud’ to have control over their data and not letting it reside in the public realm. With this acceleration, Veeam is investing in more headcount in the region to be able to assist organizations as they transition to the cloud.

Security – cybercrime

In the Middle East, security will always be a top priority. Not only can cyberattacks affect day-to-day business, impact revenue, and create other problems, but above all, it affects the brand reputation and workforce. Enterprises will continue to invest and safeguard themselves against the ever-growing increase in cyberattacks, especially ransomware. Although organizations in the Middle East, in general, spend a lot on security technologies, there is a huge gap when it comes to planning and executing a security strategy. This mainly boils down to the complexity of the IT environment. There are still a lot of legacy systems. Protecting these complicated environments is a big challenge and becomes even more so in the transition phase of moving to the cloud. Regional CISOs need to have a stringent security program in place which includes important elements like stress testing of IT Systems, backups, a disaster recovery strategy, and educating employees to become the first line of defense for improving organizational resilience

Security – data privacy and protection

In early September 2021, the UAE announced the introduction of a new federal data protection law. With this, data privacy and security are set to take center stage as consumers demand transparency and their “right” to be forgotten. By having the option of opting out, consumers can ensure that their data is being handled correctly and they are not targeted by organizations. But more importantly, international corporations that are based in the UAE and the Middle East can be assured that policies are being applied when it comes to data in-country – whether it be in terms of the way data is stored, IP is managed or how customer and consumer data is protected

Digital transformation powers ahead thanks to Containers

The rapid adoption of Containers in enterprises, the need for on-demand resources, and the flexibility of workloads will drive digital transformation. The Lack of skilled resources and understanding of the technology is a big challenge for enterprises in the Middle East. Veeam, through its acquisition of Kasten, is simplifying container strategy and delivering the industry’s leading Cloud Data Management platform that supports data protection for container-based applications built-in Kubernetes environments.
