Exclusive interview with HE Erkki Keldo Minister of Economy and Industry of the Republic of Estonia

How does Estonia plan to strengthen its partnerships with countries in the region in areas of digital transformation and smart cities during its participation in GITEX 2024?

Estonia aims to strengthen its partnerships by focusing on key growth areas like the Internet of Things (IoT), AI integration, and smart city initiatives. During GITEX 2024, Estonia’s objective is to expand bilateral cooperation in these areas with countries in the region, particularly the UAE, to support global digital economic growth. Estonian companies at the event are working on cybersecurity technologies, which is a core area of collaboration between Estonia and the UAE.

What are the key technologies and services Estonia offers in the field of digital government, and how can they be applied in other countries?

Estonia is recognised for its leading e-governance solutions, developed through collaboration between the government and local institutions. The World Bank has even rated Estonia to be number 1 in Business Ready Report in category of Public services (Business Ready)

These solutions include digital systems used in taxation, healthcare, and education. Estonia’s e-government model is highly adaptable and can be applied in other countries, such as the UAE, to enhance digital services and improve efficiency in public administration.

Are there any plans to launch joint initiatives or projects between Estonia and Middle Eastern countries based on the outcomes reached at GITEX?

Yes, Estonia has already announced a new collaboration between the Estonian company “Bolt” and Dubai Taxi Corporation, a part of Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority. This partnership is an example of ongoing efforts to launch joint initiatives, further strengthening commercial ties between Estonia and the UAE, with potential for more projects to emerge following GITEX.

How does Estonia support the start-ups participating in the exhibition to expand their presence in international markets?

Estonia has developed a supportive ecosystem that promotes the growth of startups, including those participating in GITEX. Initiatives like various hackatons allow participants to rapidly develop innovative projects, providing an opportunity for startups to expand into international markets. Estonia’s efforts to build partnerships with countries in the Middle East through GITEX help these startups find new opportunities for growth.

What is the value of Estonian companies’ investments in Dubai?

Two countries that have similar views for innovation in technology and making it use in business. The strengthening commercial relations between the two countries, particularly in fields like cybersecurity, and the collaboration between Bolt and Dubai Taxi, showcases increasing investment interest.

What is the role of artificial intelligence in developing new Estonian solutions, and were any innovative AI projects showcased at GITEX?

Artificial intelligence plays a pivotal role in Estonia’s public sector innovations. The country already uses AI in various government services, emphasizing data protection in these applications.

In addition, Estonian company 5.0Robotics launched a new Industry 5.0 Automation Cell at GITEX which was developed together with KUKA robotic arms. The Cell not only interacts seamlessly with a 6-axis robotic arm but also integrates IoT sensors to process data, training new operators in real-time and enhancing their skills. The technology behind this cell is designed to be intuitive and user-friendly. Stress levels within the machinery are visually indicated through color changes, allowing operators with minimal training to interact confidently with the AI platform. This ensures a safe production environment while maximizing productivity. The AI continuously monitors and provides feedback to maintain optimum performance, making it a “make money from the second day” technology that is both affordable and accessible to SMEs.
